Ballon D’Or Bonanza: Messi & Mou Win Big

Images courtesy of Getty/Zimbio

T’was a cracking night for fancy penguins and the cameras who love them as football’s finest put on their gladrags to rep for FIFA’s Ballon D’Or Gala 2010 in Zurich yesterday.

As we know you already know, Lionel Messi took home the big Player of the Year prize after being shortlisted with two of his Barcelona teammates (Iniesta and Xavi). As you can see, he looked totes adorable with his skaterboy swept hair, velvet tux and bow tie. Leo was typically humble and also paid tribute to his teammates, d’aww.

Jose Mourinho (left) won Manager of the Year and Brazil’s Marta won Female Player of the Year for the fifth time in a row, proving its not just the boys who have swagger on the footy field.

But let’s move on to the all important style salutations. It’s all about the best ensemble on la nuit, Kickettes. We’ve provided pictoral evidence below  for your delectation and sartorial scrutiny. Do join us?

Xavi wore a classic tux with satin buttons and trim shedding his Jersey Shore stylings for the night. Andres Iniesta kept it simple with a black tux and skinny black tie, whereas Cristiano and his flair for the dramatic went for the three-piece suit (and cheesy thumbs up), with enough hair gel to style the entire awards contingent. He’s so thoughtful.

Wesley Sneijder‘s talented tush really should have tried harder with his fash workings (at least wear a tie, Wes!) whereas Pique - clearly using his Supermodel, Work! experience looked dashing in his duds. Marta wore a lovely dress and huge smile, but the tights we feel are a huge no-no.

A special mention has been reserved for our long-time love, Iker Casillas, who obviously was too busy fortifying his front door against hourly Kickette gift/mix tape drops to have time to iron his suit. Bless. Still, it wasn’t fluorescent blue,  made of satin, or ill-fitting, so we’ll take it as a (semi) victory.

Our pick for the night? We have to give our style snaps to Leo Messi. What can we say? We love a ‘baller in a bow tie.

Who would you give your snaps (and your Ballon D’Or trophies) to, Kickettes?

  1. Zahara says:

congratulations to leo and jose, but i kinda dont agree with them..dont get me wrong, i love messi ( he IS a barca boy)
but i cant help but feel iniesta or xavi would have deserved it more. i think xavi should have gotten it coz he is amazing in both club and country, he is also a barca legend and is obsessed with football. he truly deserves it.

i also think VDB should have best coach award. why? because he led spain to win WC. may God bless his soul.

but still, im happy for mou and especially happy for messi

  2. I was rather shocked that Messi won this again. I thought Xavi would have been recognized finally. And I say this as a hard core Madridista… But I suppose these sorts of awards are biased towards strikers.

  3. Stefania says:

Congrats Leo! He deserves it hes the best player in world and i was so excited that he won. Aw he looks so adorable here in this picture. I really hope that Messi and Antonella didn't break up because they are so cute together, i hope its just a rumor

  4. C16 says:

I don't have anything to say about this… Not even about the fashion *bitter
I didn't even agree with the three finalists to begin with.
    Only I'm glad of it's Mou's win.

  5. Sheck says:

Wow, Leo! I've always been in awe and admired your talent and skills, but wow, you look absolutely dashing tonight!

  6. meh says:

Iniesta should have got it, but YES we all know messi is great I suppose.
And ronaldo needs a major haircut but looks good as usual.
    I love pique.
Nasri should have gotten best goal :(
And FIFA do need to look outside of barca and real madrid for the best players, I am sure there are some 'lesser' teams who still have outstanding players, *cough cough* fabregas and nasri *cough*

  7. Mia says:

Oh Pique! Too HOT for words!

    short arms short legs blah

  10. simone says:

i like him but he just doesn't have that appeal

  11. alf says:

wesley sneijder can win an award for being the most whipped! best moment of 2010 – getting married…. uh…. really… because he definately didn't come 2nd in the world cup, win the champions league and became world champions with intermilan….

  12. YvoYeungGirl says:

Ballon D'Or: Messi deserved it, such an agile player!

As for style wise, Pique is my pick! The shoes just add the extra 'umph' needed to complete his look for the night. It makes him look taller than he already is and 'swoon' comes to mind when you look at him!

Kudos to Sneijder for pulling out the more casual formal look.

  13. Marie says:

Congrats to Messi but i m gutted that Xavi didn't win…. i mean Messi is probably gonna win the next ten editions of this award and Xavi had a wonderful year (actually make that 3 years starting with Euro '08)….

Moving on to happier things, the ceremony itself was fun…. i love watching 'ballers in formals. Xavi Rocked his outfit, this is one award i m gonna give him (the award is more for NOT wearing that shiny suit!!!)

  14. madridlover says:

i’m getting the impression that now not many girls love Cristiano…some years ago it was different…everybody here says ‘i still don’t like Cristiano, he does nothing for me’…i kinda can’t get that…that guy is fine as hell, is an amazing player and seems a normal, funny guy overall…anyways, i love you cris :D

  15. Sarah, Madrid says:

As much I adore Messi talent however the guy didn't net one goal in the world-cup, suffer a 4-0 lost to Germany, how did he end winning this award lol.Xavi deserved the most out of the three because the guy did everything in football, if not Xavi, it should had been for Snjeider, I liked his "casual" looking suit ( I don't give a damn about this award pause haha).Mourinho deserved a much better pause than this, he looked amazing, loved how emotional he got when Snjeider mentioned him on the stage, congrats Mou you deserved the most.

P.S: honorable mentions, ( Guradiola), btw Iker' hair looked like he took the left over of Cristano gel and used it lol, however overall still look over adorable.

    • Vernanda says:

Because you don't know football at all. When Messi was in WC, the Argentina Team did not pull themselves together. Football is not one show action, it is teamwork. For Barca he mostly scores in every game. In addition to that, while he didn't produce goal in WC, he was the inspirator behind the goals. Well you probably don't understand what an inspirator is.

      • Sarah, Madrid says:

Well accusing someone of not knowing football just because they disagree with something you like, it what called a compelete ignorance, this is world cup year, where we have footballers such as forlan who did won European League and also was the master mind behind Uruguay reaching the semi-final and Messi who is a player who scored extraordinary number of goals, however was elminated in world cup quarter final and did nothing in that game and overall in the world cup he didn't do much and I am not the one who said that just hear what football experts said about his perfomance, however if it was any year but WC, he would has deserved the most out of all, but since it is so no he didn'tt, we have players such as xavi and Snjeider who deserved this award because they are the "inspirator" to their teams reaching final and winning world cup. Football is a team work and by celebrating this the award should have gone to xavi because he is the mastermind in Spain and Barcelona. Messi is a football phenomenon, but fair is fair Xavi deserve it because he delivered on both international and club level..

        • Sarah, Madrid says:

If you know anything in fooball, you would just looked at the history of the game, year 1998 R9 – Brazilian Ronaldo had an extraordinary year with his club Inter and world cup too however in the end it went to Zidane because he reached final UCL and won world cup 1998. Football is about being a phenomenon player it is about achievement too, Xavi and Snjeider deserve too because they achieve trophies in this year. Anyway, even with the questionable voting that happened, Messi still deserve a place on the top 3, deserved the most out of all 3 no, however his unique talent give him the right to win.
it is what we call a complete ignorance**

  16. annafcb says:

Hot men in suits and Marta rocking that white dress… I'd like to have my own ceremony with them (Except for Cristiano Ronaldo, he does nothing for me, I'm sure any other kickette will be happy to take care of him for me!). Also, congrats Leo, you brilliant little man.

  17. Pam says:

Leo reminds me of a cute puppy. It is hard not to like him :)

  18. @DebStimson says:

I think Leo is one of the best players ever but I was really hoping that Xavi would have been recognized for all he does for Barca & Spain. Messi is fantastic but he can't do it alone. It's players like Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, etc. that get him the ball so he can be "the little magician. Imo, he wouldn't be nearly as successful on Barca without them. Case in point, his success with Argentina, where there really hasn't been a "Xavi" type player to orchestrate things.

    Anyone who has seen Barca games where Xavi was on the bench or didn't play can clearly see that Barca's just not the same fine tuned machine that they are when Xavi's on the pitch. This coupled with his contributions to Spain is really why I was pulling for him. But as with many sports the "support players" are usually the most overlooked stars. Some of the pix I've seen of Xavi & Iniesta at the awards just broke my heart. They looked SO sad. :'{

That being said, I do feel badly for Messi. I'm sure he hears all the reports/comments saying that Xavi or Iniesta deserved it more. That kind of takes the wind out of his sails, I would think. Idk, he just seems like such and adorable (think little brother) and humble person. I'm sure if he had his way, Xavi or Iniesta would have won it too.

I hope that it's not true that Messi & Antonella broke up. They're cute together. Wait…weren't they engaged?

    • Lotte (Zlatanista) says:

You know what? I think I agree with every single word you say :) ! Xavi has had a fundamental importance in one of the worlds best clubs, and in the worlds best National team, for many years now. What more can he do?

I love Lio (and I love, love, love Andres) and he deserves it, but I wanted Xavi to win it. I hope he will be the coach of the Spanish NT (or Barcelona) some day and win everything!

      • Sheck says:

I agree with the both of you, well said! As much as I love Leo & Andres, Xavi is without doubt the heart of Barca,he's simply the midfield maestro ;) He deserved it but then again, why are these journalists and reporters claiming that Xavi should've won , when it clearly shows the majority of the industry voted for Messi?

    • Taskeen says:

i heard the same about him and antonella! i saw a quote apparently from his grandfather basically saying that leo used to have a girlfriend and that they just broke up but he is young and must enjoy himself. quite a shocker hey

  19. barcaroja says:

Awww… my Barca boys (and Pep too!) look dayuuuuum fine in their suits! Mini-Pep's in training! Messi's suit is a winner, who would've thought that a velvet tuxedo jacket could actually look good? Very apropos for a Ballon d'Or winner :) such a fashion risk taker you Leo!

Pique oh Pique… why are you all up in my bizness? You are such a distraction! And why do you always have to look so uninterested-devil may care-where's the after party face? Are you trying to kill me slowly? Or are you just trying to get me fired? Can you at least smile for a teeny bit? I'm watching you! :P

  20. maramac says:

Marta's dress looks so cute—but can hardly blame her for wearing tights! No pro footballer will have the flawless, waxed legs of a WAG…I for one think the tights would look better under the camera than a shinguard tan and turf burns.

  21. Messi still looks ugly in my eyes :|

  22. xbabyshakesx says:

awww boo no pics of the TOP 11? =[
anywhoo I'm super duper happy that LUCIO made it to the team!
and I really really wished that Xavi or Snijder would've won

    oh well congrats messi!

  23. honeybee says:

    Pique. Because he's Pique.

  24. ANON says:

Marta looks really pretty here. She always seems a little awkward but I'm glad to see her looking so good!

  25. Real Madrid23 says:

i thought Xavi should have got it this time

  26. Catie says:

Cris looks like a wax version of himself, Messi looks adorable (he will forever look 12 and super cute!), Xavi looks like a kid in a candy store and Pique makes me drool. My vote goes to Messi for doing something different (velvet AND a bowtie? Have Cris flash his thumbs up thataway).

  27. YFL says:

Xavi was robbed! Pep hot hot hot! But I see the Special one can't tie his tie worth @&*#@

  28. @AgnesWonka says:

Messi deserves it! Spaniardes believe they deserve it because of the WC, well, i'm sorry but Leo is better than all of that!!
    Mou….you rock!!!
CR looks so sexy, that everybody dies!

  29. Susana says:

I think Xavi deserved it more. Messi is good, but if you compare their wins they are equal, except that Xavi won the WC!
But who cares about the award…
If I had been seated next to Pique I can only imagine the things we would have discussed. *censored*

And as for "I can't be bothered to raise my own child"…if his topknot hair gets any bigger he'll be able to fashion it into a bow. Why can't he style his hair normally, like Pique…I always come back to Pique. :)

  30. EspePique says:

Oh my god , Pique is so damn hot in his suit .

  31. Thanks Kickette for this. Mou looks really bizarre, but I like him. It's the dark side, it just pulls me in. BUT we need to see more Lucio and Pep!

  32. diana says:

I'm happy for Messi, no doubt he deserves to win, BUT i think Xavi should have won.
He's the heart and soul of Barca, most consistent player out of the 3 finalists…i really don't remember him ever having an average game, he is always fit!
    Plus he's now 30 y.o, i don't think he'll get another opportunity to win this thing :(
Then again Cannavaro won it at 34 or so

  33. D0li says:

Has anyone heard that Shakira has broken up with her 11 year boyfriend? Do you think this has anything to do with Pique? I hope not.. I mean I'm freaking out I cannot compete with her :( he needs a more wholesome girl!

I like him in that pic btw, I wish he would cut his hair though, that thing on top is starting to look like Cristiano's mullet/over gelled/crappy hair.

    • @DebStimson says:

"I wish he would cut his hair though, "

I agree…Pique, De Gea and Kun Aguero…just to name a few. Even if they just cut of some of the top part, it would help. Idk…seems to be one of the "in" haircuts for footballers lately.

      • amy says:

Omg I totally agree with you doli..He needs to do something about it..but he has come a long way..from terrible hair styles in my opinion

  34. Carla says:

Guardiola looking hot as hell! Visca Barça

  35. Goosie says:

Lionel Messi is both 12 and a hobbit. Yep. I said it.

  36. Deanna says:

There is just something about Wesley Sneijder. He looks DAMN FINE.

    So does Mou ;D

  37. Maribel says:

I don't love Cris' hair, but he looks good as always. Yay for Jose!

  38. aps says:

    Messi looks adorable.
The shoes messed up Mou's outfit.
The three piece suit does not fit Crissy.
C'mon Kickette? U expected better from Sneijder after what he wore to his OWN wedding?
Marta's stockings and shoes make her look like she's going to church. Everything else looks good on her though.

  39. Ashley says:

Messi look like a little hobbit.

  40. Sarah P says:

@Merel …. the old men at FIFA don't vote on the prize, it's chosen by international journalists, coaches and team captains :) There's a pdf floating around the internet and you can see who voted for who — messi just got the greatest number of points. not a conspiracy theory or anything!

  41. YouNeverWalkAlone says:

Awww Leo looks like my adorkable little brother or something…soooo cute :D And the bow tie…I have the urge to hug him and muss up his hair :D

  42. SoccerLoverrr says:

I'm really glad Messi got player of the year!! He totaally deserves it; he seems liek a reali chill/sweet dude not to mention a talented player :) alsooo piquee looks ocean's eleven HOTTTT, like that man is hella fine in ANYTHING (or nothing)..on a side note, c.ronaldo was that thumbs up necessary? kickette you are absolutely right, it's completely CHEESY.

  43. Merel says:

Proof how biased the FIFA really is. Messi? Really? REALLY?! I understand he's the most talented out of them all, no doubt. Bu come on mates, what have you been drinking? Wesley Sneijder has won the triple and is vice-champion with Oranje. Is it just me and my bright orange glasses but the old men at FIFA like Messi a bit too much….

  44. shaniaR says:

OMG, he deserves this prize! No doubt they decided to give it to him because of his impecable, absolutely flawless performance he gave at the WC. Oh, tears come to my eyes, when I think about the magical touch he gave to the ball during the match against Germany. You can't beat the man, you just can't! Im-f*cking-possible!

Seriously, this ballon d'or thing became a joke ever since they denied it to Thierry Henry. And THAT man WAS flawless.

  45. Lotte (Zlatanista) says:

There was just so much going on at that Gala! And here are a few memorable moments (at least as I see it):

    - Lio in a tux! So cute, welldressed…and wonderfully dorky looking at the same time!
    - Pique speaking English. Just how sexy is that!?
    - And finally: What was Pep thinking? Maybe this: "Stupid gala! Stupid Jose winning the stupid award! I know! I'm gonna turn the envelope the wrong way so that everyone will see who wins the Golden Ball in advance, and ruin the whole surprise thing! HA! And then some!"

Congrats to Lio! There is no doubt in my mind that he deserved this. But I want to cry when I think of Xavi and his sad eyes. Maybe he won't get another chance at this. What he should do now is to find a good woman, get a bunch of kids and ensure that the world will see generations of Xavi's, boys and girls, in the future. In fact I demand it!

    • Kelly says:

Pique spoke English!?! Kickettes hook a sister up with the vid please…

    • Kelly says:

Omg!! Pique speaking English..I don't know if i have said this already but Kickettes hook up the link..Please

    • Pique_Xavi says:

Hey! How did you hear about my plans with Xavi? Even though I think Xavi this year deserved it more than Messi for his contribution in the WC, Messi is well deserved of all or any awards. It was sad for me though because I was hoping and hearing everywhere Xavi was a shoe in and one gets all excited and then the shocker having to acutally read it? LOL Oh Pep! But yes, Messi went throught Excited, shocked, happy, humble and appreciate all in like what seemed to be seconds. He's a darling manboy and he knows that some of his success come from his teammates not just him and that makes him even more wonderful. I think Xavi may have one last chance with all he's already accomplishing right now like his 550 games with Barca and his oh so accurate passing… people need to stop looking at just the guy who scores. Again, Messi is more than that too but sometimes people want him to keep scoring and scoring…. La Masia does good :)

      • Lotte (Zlatanista) says:

Lol, I knew you would react to that! Go get him, girl:)!

Yes, I was hoping for Xavi too this time. He is the heart and soul of the tiki-taka, and I don't think Barca would've had such success without him. I'm happy for Lio though. He is a little magician. They both make football look easy and fun.

Oh and let's hope for Xavi next year!

        • Pique_Xavi says:

Here! Here! *holds up glass* To Xavi winning and being recognized next year but because he's so talented and an absolute playmaker not because it may be his last chance at the award.

I'm trying to come up with a plan to casually run into him, lol. Yes, Barca has needed him so much specially these past few years. All are essential to this great team but the first few matches when he didn't play you saw a difference.

Of course, Messi is a rare jewel and if other clubs didn't take notice or didn't want to take a chance that was their biggest mistake. La Masia obviously knows not only to recognize talent but to let it shine each with their own abilities without trying to mold them into something they are not. Messi with his hard work and team work has accomplished so much in such a short time.

Love them both, but Xavi will always be my #1 Ballon d'or.

  46. ~Ang~ says:

I got question are yall going to do a WAG version of this report …. Cause I know Ana (Andres Iniesta) Patricia (David Villa) Malena (Carles Puyol) were all their to support their men Sara wasn't there with Iker though??? I wonder why… But I didn't know if any othe WAG was there last night??? I know alot brought their parents and siblings like Geri and Xavi!!!

  47. ~Ang~ says:

    I agree with Mel …

Leo – ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS FOOTBALL AS EVER SEEN!!! but he won it last year and didn't win the WC
Andres – all he did was score the winning GOOOOOL!!! in the WC and score another …but he was out for the begining part of the year…
Xavi – HIS THE ONE THE DESERVES IT!!!! For everything he has done with his FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team…. He really had the best year ever …
and if NOT Spaniard … Cause I also though David Villa deserved to win and Iker Casillas ….

I would have said Wes Sneijder…. he had an awsome year with Inter and the NT…. BTW I love the fact he said the best part of 2010 was getting married to his beautiful wife… and DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNNNNNNNNNN!!! his hot….

And for those who don't know Lionel Andres Messi … is SINGLE!!!!!! His grandpa on a radio show said that him and Antonella had a fight and broke up…. "Fortunate in Football but Unfortunate in love" (is something he said or the reporter said I dont remember)

    • Lotte (Zlatanista) says:

That was sad news! I like her. Are you sure?

    • Leya_S says:

I totally agree with you. I was kind of mad that Messi won! I was totally like "WHAT HAPPENED TO XAVI???" Plus I definitely thought Sneidjer would have been on the short list! If anyone's interested, Dirty Tackle posted the results of the voting. You can find it on their website orrrrrrrrr here:

As for Leo and Antonella, how did they just have one fight and break up?!?!? I'm hoping they get back together!

      • Leya_S says:

Oh, and also, Leo does look so adorbs! He's totally rocking that velvet jacket and bow tie!
My vote (and my heart <3 ) goes to Geri…

      • LosAngeleno says:

Ahhh….Boca voted for Xavi! (And Iniesta second). Love that man!!! (Thanks for the link).

      • Sheck says:

Me too, she's just so adorable and pint sized like him. They're a match made in heaven! Hope they sort out their diffrences.

    • *Maylea* says:

Xavi was my fav too, I'm gutted!!! :/

    • aps says:

Noooo. I really liked them together. Hope the work it out.

    • Pique_Xavi says:

Heard about the Messi thing, but trust me and most of you know, never trust a family member with news like this… it could be a cooling off seperation, they (specially him i would think) will not let that relationship just end. Maybe his grandpa was just saying it not stating the relationship was over forever. When one is in a relationship for that long and with all the things planned together it takes a few months to actually call it a breakup…or maybe its me. But I hope Leo and Anto work it, they seemd truly happy together and it will be hard to find another girl like her right now… he's too famous and rich he will find lots of golddiggers first… too sad to think that… wait and see I guess.

  48. Pandora says:

I have a lot of comments about the award but that topic is boring now.. I mean, look at Pique *.* he is gorgeous,. no? :P

  49. monique says:

    Marta's dress is beautiful!

  50. mamaly says:

    Ballon d'or Mourinho, every time

  51. @SweetNohemi says:

Omg! I can't stop looking at his picture! He does look like a skaterboy with that cute hair! He looks so young!

  52. @SweetNohemi says:

Awwww Messi looks ADORABLE and so humble! I love El Barca and kind of like Real Madrid. I still don't like Cristiano!

  53. Mel says:

I think the best player in the world award, should be given to a spainard, who won the WC, because being a world champion must mean being the best??

Or am I the only one with that perception ??

    • @SweetNohemi says:

Umm I don't know. For example which Spanish footballer?

      • YouNeverWalkAlone says:

IKER CASILLAS–goalkeepers are always overlooked :(

or Iniesta, since he was kind of the one who scored the winning goal of the WC

      • Tania says:

Well, Xavi or Iniesta, for example, who were also on the list… Or Iker, as Youneverwalkalone said… I totally agree: goalies are always overlooked. Even Cristiano said so…

Messi is a fantastic player and he had a great season with Barça, but so did Xavi, who is also an outstanding player. And he won the WC.

So, so dissapointed that FIFA didn't choose one of my boys… Again, Messi is great, but their giving him the Ballon d'Or this year just feels wrong to me…

    • Tash says:

I would think it means being the best team-not necessarily the best individuals but the best collective-of the tournament

    • Pique_Xavi says:

I think that they overlooked the fact that collectively Messi is great but that Xavi is a true asset to both teams Barca and Spain, and you can see the difference if Xavi isn't on the field, specially with Spain. He's not perfect but if you see the matches you can tell. I'm not just saying this because I support Xavi but because I feel it was something that was overlooked by the voters. They didn't see that? The media wanted to tear apart both CR and Messi for not having lots of goals and not having good games but I don't think a team should just depend on just one player. These last two are great players whether you like them or not you have to see it, but if they count the big football event Xavi in my eyes had the most to gain. I don't think it should have gone to Iniesta just because he scored the winning goal, because he's more than just that one goal and he's been showing it with Barca. Its not just about the goals to be a great football player or at least they should have special awards for different positions, many time too like some here have said, goalkeepers get left behind too… my favorite in the WC was Julio Cesar…

  54. Pique: Tell you the truth, I don't really wanna be here…Alex's bed is much more comfortable ;)
Xavi: Just smile and stare, Xavi, smile and stare…
Cristiano: *sigh* For the last time, my hair is SUPPOSED to look like this!
Mou: Stand like this? this? Ok. Like this?
Messi: Admit it-on a scale of 9 to 10, just how sick am I? The bow tie was my idea *looks bashful*
I'm glad Messi won it, he seems like a good guy off the pitch! Maybe next time Xavi and Andres. Definitely next time! :) Snaps to Pique. Why?….he's Pique
