Brazil Win the Confederations Cup

Brazil can claim full swagger rights after winning the Confederations Cup over USA 3-2 this weekend.

Brazil were the favourites, and made an impressive comeback after being 2 goals down by the end of the first half. They certainly deserve two snaps this morning for their efforts.

We thought the Americans did themselves proud too, playing with a lot of heart, thigh and ab.

We ask: why are baller sad faces so damn sexy? Do we have issues? Don’t answer that.

We’d be very interested to know what our readers think about a story published yesterday made about “The Great Soccer Con” namely, mocking the idea that football will ever become popular in the States.

Perhaps it’s best if you have a nice cup of tea ready for soothing whilst you read.

Congrats Brazil!

Brazil truly deserved the win, USA played with alot of heart, but lets be honest, they got a few lucky breaks. About the US not embracing football, thats very simple. It's all about the money over here. The format that football is played in wouldn't allow for a million commercials and advertisements per game play, like it is the case in basketball, american football, baseball, etc. 90 minutes straight without profiting off of commercials? Perish the thought. Greedy bastards.

Tammy I loved it when Landon said that. Although I'm so proud of them, I reeeeally wanted to win and he summed up what I felt perfectly. "We don't want respect, we want to win." Amen

Carly, that would be Felipe Melo. I'm so happy my Brazil won! Poor Lúcio was so overwhelmed, talking about crying alone in his room after discovering he got the boot from Bayern. My heart went out for him. I also thought it was quite hot when Boca tried to hump Kaká…Well played USA, but I'm glad Brazil seems to be getting their groove back and hope that in 2010 it'll be hexa.

Yai! Brazil, but I wanted Spain to win :( wtv, I liked Brazil to beat them because Us, call football, soccer, good!

Very proud of the boys after a horrible start..they showed their hearts, their pride, their passion and I am fine with that. They played Brazil to the end and in no way was it a give me. I woke up yesterday morning and my first thought was "the worst we can do today is come in second to Brazil in an international tourney. I am fine with that." I do think Landon said it best: "we are at the point we don;t want respect, we want to win." few things as an American fan can make me happier than that

Congrats to Brazil on an impressive comeback. USA were outstanding in the first half and then it seemed they decided to try to sit on their lead and defend and that just doesn't work against an opponent with so many outstanding attacking options. Poor tactics from Bradley IMO. But all in all, an entertaining match and the US can be proud of (at least half) of their display. Tim Howard was a GOD in goal! Absolutely superb!!! Glad he won the keeper award. Poor Dempsey in tears as they accepted their 2nd place medals…broke my heart. But really…who thought the USA would get 2nd place out of that group of countries in the first place?! Well done, boys. Hope the experience serves you well in the World Cup!

colbert did a good spoof on whther soccer is important. good times. i calles brazil and spain finals at confed so i’m glad one of my teams got it. not team usa. gah. anyone remember when they were dominating soccer. that was the dark ages. never again. go europe. go south america. go go go.

  10. Tasnim says:

All I have to say, is that I would try my best to turn the skipper of USA’s frown upside down wink he is so cute!

  11. Alex says:

I have some major respect for the USA squad. We may have lost our luster in the second half, but I have never been so proud of our boys. We still have quite a bit of work to do (ie. holding the ball in the midfield and up top, putting better pressure on players at the top of the box…), but we showed that we can play with the world’s biggest teams and put up a fight. Give credit where it’s due!

I love your website, I read religiously.

  13. Raina says:

I’m so proud of our NT! The US boys were amazing in the 1st half and you can tell they truly believe they can play with anyone now and they’re right. They lost steam in the 2nd half, and you can’t do that against Brazil, but in the end, it was wonerful for them to get as far as they did. And who cares if footie isn’t super popular here in the states? The Americans that do love it are the only ones I want to hang out with anyway! <img src="http://www.kickette.com/images/smileys/smile.gif" width="19" height="19" alt="smile" style="border:0;" />

And I'm devastated about the USMNT yet also very proud. I mean, to watch them really sink in the second half after such an amazing first half…damn. Just got my hopes up :( . But looking back the past few weeks and no one thought they'd get to the final, let alone the semis. They should be proud they played so well, and the Spain match was one of the U.S.'s best soccer upsets.

  15. FernieT says:

Now, unfortunately, in America, there are some people that are being obnoxious and thinking that they know everything about the sport. Just because they know who David Beckham is… The only people that watch the World Cup here, or soccer in general, are either the few teenagers that play it, or the internationals living in America. The majority couldn't really care less. And I honestly don't think that will ever change.

  16. zo-t says:

SELECAO!!! Brazil played beautifully in the 2nd half and I think it's commendable how badly they wanted to win this, considering no one really cares about the Confederation Cup that much. Fabiano was fabulous, perfect way to silence those critics that claim Brazil lacks attacking power, Lucio was a great capatain and Kaka was… perfect. His headed goal ought to have been allowed. All in all, Brazil showed USA some quality Football in the end, and that's what matters. All is well in the world of footy!

  17. ThunderGirl says:

Great match even if US did blow it in the second half. Tim Howard was absolutely brilliant!!! As for that article… Mike Freeman is an idiot and doesn't have a clue about real football. He should stick to writing about "throwball".

  18. Candide says:

Well, I didn't read the article but I've heard things like that ALL week so I can imagine what it says. Football isn't very popular here because we haven't grown up with it. And, unlike Britain and many other places in the world, we have LOTS of sports to watch and be fans of. But, the more the USMNT plays like they did the past week, the more Americans will watch. People who usually could care less about football watched the game yesterday. I know alot of people my age did. The game is slowly being introduced and I definitely think it will become very popular here. How could it not! and the fact that the USMNT is all over the news/ESPN this week just proves that people care and are excited about it. Having said that, congrats to Brasil! The second half proved why they are footballing gods! but I was sad we didn't win, after the 2nd half I, perhaps naively, thought we had a chance :(

  19. carly says:

haha that's such a funny picture. Who's the player not-kissing the trophy in the right?

  20. LizB (Mrs. Vucinic) says:

*sigh of epic proportions* well, we played a good first half and then sat there and watched for the second half. But to be perfectly honest with myself, I didn’t even expect the USMNT to make it to the final in the first place so silver is wonderful.

Footie is coming along in the States, but it won’t bother me if it never becomes a big deal. We’ll ship our players overseas to play (I like it better that way anyway since I really can’t get myself to be interested in MLS) and I can continue to watch my european footie in peace. Though perhaps if it were bigger over here we’d get better announcers. Hmmm *ponders*

Anyway, Howard had an amazing tournament, he was a joy to watch… and I hope that they turn (relative) success here into a better time at the next WC (I don’t expect them to win, that would be silly, but have a good tournament, that’s all I ask)

Wonderful comeback guys, I knew u could do it, never doubted it for a minute….well, maybe a second, but never the full minute.

  22. aristeia says:

I was traveling during the 2nd half, so I was relying on text msg updates and the hope that ESPN radio would give me some info. What I got was severely irritated. Some of the crap that ESPN sportscaster said really chapped my arse.

Regardless, I’m happy for the USMNT about their accomplishment! And of course congrats to Brazil. Now if I could just figure out what the hell is wrong w/ Juan and how I can fix him, I’ll be all set.

no kickette, you dont have issues. I think everyone likes a baller with a sad face!

but just not all the time!
