Awful news out of Virginia, USA. US National team striker Charlie Davies, who plays for Sochaux in Ligue 1, has been in a terrible one-car accident that claimed the life of a young female passenger and left him in the hospital with serious injuries.

Charlie played in the recent USA v Honduras World Cup group qualifiers and is now facing a lengthy recovery period and rehabilitation. His injuries read as scary for any footballer: a broken right femur and tibia (which then required titanium rods), a lacerated bladder, facial lacerations, and a fractured left elbow.

Our thoughts are with Charlie, his family and the families of the others involved in the crash. The state of the car gives us chills. Ugh.

The news of Charlie breaks my heart. And the loss of his friend is tremendously sad. Seeing our boys pull through in the number 1 spot today, and all of the 9′s that were held up in his honour, made today’s match all the more important. So proud of my boys.

So awful. I’m hoping he fully recovers and it would be the icing on the cake if he plays soccer again. My thoughts and prayers are with him and and his loved ones and with the poor woman who passed away in the accident. So sad.

But, God… to break a femur, just think about how hard that hit was. Your femur is harder than concrete. Jeez.

Here is an article I wrote on this sad story. http://wdkf.co.uk/2009/10/13/heartbreaking-news-u…
The girl who passed, 22 year old Ashley Roberta, is friends with some of my friends. Her latest twitter statement is chilling.

Davies does not appear to have been the driver and will likely return to football although appearing for the USMNT in World Cup 2010 is not probable.

It is a tragedy and a reminder to everyone to please not drink and drive. Although police have not come out and said alcohol was involved, this accident occurred at 3:15 AM on the G-W parkway, which is a common route to get from clubs in the District back to Suburbia.

Charlie Davies seems like a great, fun loving guy. And Ashley Roberta was absolutely beautiful, vibrant, a recent university of Maryland graduate with a promising life ahead of her.

Sending thoughts and prayers to Charlie, to the Robertas, and to the driver, who will likely suffer psychologically for the rest of their life.

    So so sad.

If police haven’t confirmed the involvement of alcohol, it is quite irresponsible for you to suggest it played a part.

  18. HiL says:

That is terrible! I wish the best to all of the involved in the accident.
