Fond Farewells: Raul and Guti Exit Madrid

We certainly hope Real Madrid stocked up on tissues, as the teams two longest serving players finally said goodbye this week.

As you know, Guti’s off to flaunt his ‘creative’ take on hairdressing and equally creative fashion choices in Turkey at Beksitas, and Raul looks likely to take his tousled locks and adorable fam to the Bundesliga with Schalke. It was an emotional farewell from two players with over 400 goals,  1,200 games and 29 years between them for Los Blancos.

La Liga certainly won’t be the same without Raul’s glorious nose, inspirational ability to pro-create like there’s no tomorrow and of course, his fantastic goal scoring talent. A huge loss (in terms of our entertainment value) will be Guti’s fiesty attitude.

It’s the end of an era, Kickettes. Lets wish the lads every success at their future clubs. We’ll leave you with this from teammate Alvaro Arbeloa’s Twitter:

We’ll miss you my friend. All the best. You deserve it. We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life..

As far as we know, Alvaro has not signed with Diddy. He’s just expressin’ his-self during this emotional time.

For a long time, I haven’t fully been able to chose between Real Madrid and Barca, which is crazy because you just can’t be with both. Since I’m not from Spain, I haven’t really been “forced” to choose between the two.

One thing I have ALWAYS admired about Madrid was their captain, Raul. I have a lot of respect for this player. He is really a great captain and imagining Madrid without him just makes me feel empty.

    Raul is a true legend.

I know that the fans will miss him and hope from my heart that they will give him a proper farewell like they have for legends before Raul(watching Zidane’s farewell brings me nearly to tears every time). Though he won’t be playing, a player like him deserves this.

Guti too is an icon for Madrid, and it’s sad to see him go after so long.

I wish them the best of luck in their new clubs, and for the rest of their careers.

  2. caitanya says:

Oh, our dear Raul–why does he leave la liga for germany? Strange …

And as for Gutz, perhaps he can be that rock star he has always wanted to be.

    We will miss them both!

  3. SoccerDuckie says:

:'( Wish those two all the very best.

  4. Ace says:

it's a shame that two wonderful figures must leave the place where they've achieved all. Serán extrañados, muchachos

  5. Mrs Navas says:

why are you guys leaving la liga???!!! oh the agony!!! we’ll certainly miss you both

  6. JamilaRamos says:

Two Madrista legends. I still cannot get over the fact that Midfield Maestro Guti and the world's best striker Raul are leaving a club that has defined their footballing career :'(. I hope one day they will return to the World's biggest and (sorry Arsenal) best club! I'll have to do with Real Madrid TV for the few years then (Sky Channel 446).

I'm also going to miss seeing him and The Ramos on a night out dressed like twins.

Anyway, ladies, if you've never seen these videos on youtube before, then you have been missing out! At least they'll make you laugh!

    Heres a few:

  7. zahara says:

i am barca forever but theres just something that kills me inside when i see raul cry.:(

    also guti, dont go!

    i just dont get it..

    • D0li says:

I honstly think that they are being forced to leave.. the new coach is trying to get rid of excess baggage and thus getting rid of two legends who aparantly aren't worthy enough to start during the games; because they are older they have been reduced as subsitutes.

  8. Emma says:

This is a sad time in history of Raul Madrid! A.K.A Real Madrid :(
I cried too Raul, ur not alone.
I’ll love no matter where you play.
Raul you were born a Madridista please retire a Madridista. PLEASE.

  9. lillah says:

Raul is one of my fav players since 1997. I will miss him so much..but I think it was a right decision..Real Madrid isn’t the same team which was ten years ago or so. I wish him all the best in Germany (at Schalke 04 probably although it isn’t official yet), I wish the same for Guti as well.

  10. German2505 says:

Now he'll be playing at Schalke 04, it's official now.

    Not my fav club.

Just can't believe he's now a Bundesliga player. Can't imagine Real without him :-(

  11. serbian_girl says:

    So sad :’(((

  13. Evodia says:

LOL LOL LOL LOL!!! At Arbeloa. Kickette I was so emotionally involved in this article until I saw Arbeloa's message and your commentary! *dies* hahahahaha!

    • u2canbethisfly says:

LMAO. EXACTLY! Except, I wasn’t emotional I was like, “oh…poor them. whatever.” Then I read the tweet and the Kickette commentary thereafter and almost fell off my chair. *dead* Still laughing in the grave…

  14. Dominique says:

    I will miss Raul’s nose

      • lulu says:

Looooooved it!!!!! Thanks so much for posting!
Oooh! i have a question! I have a question!!! *raises hand and jumps up and down on school chair*
(I speak Spanish but not Catalonian)
Are all Crackovia videos in catalonian or are they translated into spanish sometimes??? i really wanna see one with pique facing his crackovia imitator in an interview, but i don’t understand a thing because it’s in that sexy language of theirs…
        help, please.. :D

  15. lulu says:

the first club that ever made me watch a champions league match at the embarrassingly late age of fifteen, was Guti-Raul-Zidane-Casilla’s Real Madrid! I can’t believe so many of them are gone… it’s sooo weird :(
I don’t even wanna think about the day when Casillas retires!!!!!!!
OMG!!!! Can that even be possible? *sniff*
    Pass the rum, girls…

    • Pia says:

same here! i became ‘in love’ with football because of the galacticos! i miss them….

      • lulu says:

Indeed! They were a great great great team!

but this new season looks seriously promising!!! hopefully new legends are in the making

        gotta love football :D

  16. Maria K says:

ohhhh i just love Guti i'm really so sad that he is leaving =(

  17. simone says:

If i had not seen Raul play years ago in a matchin la liga were they were up by 7-1.I might have never been interested in the game of football so i thank Raul for getting me interested in the game of football, because i thought it was a sport with ugly hairy guys, because of him I also became a fan of Real madrid and the spanish national team. i will miss the way he kisses his ring when he scores or his beautiful nose. i will miss bith of these players but i’m looking at the next legend IKER CASILLAS.

  18. Ami99 says:

    Guti!! Guti!!!

This guy is my style icon. Something really endearing about him. dont think he is straight but that’s what makes him real entertaining.

I was heartbroken when Hierro left way back, then Figo and Zidane (though they were not in the same category)….and now Raul and Guti….

Real will no longer be the same for me. I prefer the way Barca has an identity

Guti is simply class. and none can pass the ball the way he does, pleasure to watch him play

  19. GraceGibson says:

Its so sad. Real without Raul seems something so far out of this world. I don´t think I can remember a time without him there *and I am one of the older girls around here*
It is a sad day, really. :( Wish both of them all the best for their future!

  20. DC says:

it's still too soon for me to not be affected by news of them. my captains will be back one day and Madrid will welcome them with open arms.

  21. Tora says:

Real won’t be the same without them. :(

  22. Ami99 says:

So that leavea Iker the only cantenara in the first team?

  23. Jackie says:

wow arbey so funny and thoughtful

  24. Anya says:

    Bad boys for life?!!! AHHAAAHAHAHAHA!

And I thought Alvaro was one of the smart ones…

Good movie but wrong quote for this kind of situation. Something from Evita or Gladiator would be much more appropriate.

  25. beri says:

Ok…I'm getting a lil teary eyed! These two will most definitely be missed….RM Legends!

  26. Jules says:

Raul looks like my dad thirty years ago therefore I can never find him hot. His nose is fine for a man but dear God, speaking from experience, do I hope his daughter inherited Mamen's nose.

So is Arbeloa the Martin Lawrence to Guti's much flashier Will Smith?

  27. Mel says:

It's the end of one era, but hopefully the beginning of a new one!

With both Raul and Guti leaving, the captain band goes to Casillas, leaving Ramos 2. in command (?) perhaps. Which is a good thing.

But it's the end of two greats in Real history….. At least Guti's hilarious picture from when he joined Real's first team will be on the wall of the Bernabeu tour forever!

I'm so going there again to laugh at it one last time.

  28. Ofeily9 says:

Que mierdaa… Real wont be the same without Raul and Guti, I hope Raul wil score these 3 goals for mark the history and became the first striker two scores 70 goals in Champions League, he deserves this

  29. Jackie says:

Wow I can't imagine a Real Madrid Team without Raul.

  30. Maria says:

I’ve never supported a Raul-less Madrid. This is going to be so weird!!

He will always be El Angel Del Madrid!!

PS. It’s not Mourinho that wants them out. It’s Florentino!! The only reason for Madrid’s downfalls!!! grrrr!!

  31. Ash says:

    Awwwwwwww :`(

  32. Zinny says:

Raul is a legend. He was a great leader for Real Madrid. That's just too bad. :(

On another note, who else laughed their ass off at Arbeloa's tweet? Kickette hit it on the nose with the Diddy reference. Haha.

    • Liz says:

i can't stop laughing at Arbeloa's tweet! so hilarious! i never imagined him saying that.

  33. shay says:

I am not surprised to see Guti treated this way but Raul? Drobga would say it's a f**king disgrace!

  34. senora ramos says:

kickette. how could you do this to me?! those pics. no one should see raul and guti crying. NO ONE!

oh my loves. i am going to miss you both sooooooo much. you are the only real madrid i have ever known! i just can't handle this. 1 and 2 days have not eased the heartbreak. thank you for all the years, good and bad. i'm going sob uncontrollably in a corner now.

good luck to the boys who will always be blancos to me regardless of where they go and what they do from here.

    • senora ramos says:

i also ask, ladies, that unless you have any kind of evidence besides hatred of jose (who i am now willing to give a fair shake after whining for a few months. i am NOT a fan of what he brings, but he is my coach and i will support him until the time it becomes clear that i just can't do it anymore), that you don't just assume that he is the reason they are out. it has been talked about for a few years with guti and all year with both guti and raul. lack of playing time is why they are leaving. they and i feel that the are physically able to still play, but they haven't been needed as much with the club. they played less under pelle this year than any years previously, so i don't think it's fair to blame jose. call me naive, but it's how i feel. ::ducksandcovers::

      • Lisa says:

no offence intended. Just seems really fishy to me they would continue playing at other clubs rather than ride off into the sunset as Merengues.

I dunno its not my club so I guess I shouldn't stick my nose where it doesn't belong.

Would it make you feel any better if I told you that having Jose as your coach means your chances of beating AND pissing off Barca increases tenfold? *nudges Bacardi 151 bottle towards covers*

        • tammyv says:

They don't feel that they are ready to give up the game… they don't feel that they are too old so they are still trying. It would be great to ride of into the sunset but they are not ready

          • senora ramos says:

that’s what i think too tammy. they’re not ready to give up the sport. they want more playing time. hence, they are going to new clubs where they’ll get it.

        • senora ramos says:

well, it does make the touchline a lot hotter. sniff sniff. and anything to piss off barca is a good thing. sniff sniff. ::downsbottleofrum:: lol! how am i going to trash talk you now?! i think we’re still all in euphoria over spain’s win. that’s what i blame all these good feelings b/t barcagirls and rm girls. lol.

          • JulieFromParis says:

Here is somthg to cheer U up my friend:

Go to the jumpsuit contest, we've been awarded funniest comments ever by Missy Manchester!

I'm so proud of us girl, our great sense of humour finally recognised for what it is = pure genius, lol!!

(Im sorry kickettes… But with Guti and El Angel de Madrid leaving, i think i'm going nuts)

            • senora ramos says:

julie, my sister from another mother, we are amazing. lol. i too blame it on the insanity we’ve been put through since last year. i think we have cracked.

          • Thea says:

Game on Ramos – dissing my beloved Barca. Jose pulled it off at CL semi's but do you HONESTLY think Pep's Barca are gonna fall for it week after week. Actually think that Jose will have a Sourcer/ Apprentice relationship with Pep that my end it Pep eventually overtaking him!

            • Zlatanista says:

              I second that!

              • Barcelista says:

Well spoken!! (or written actually ;) ) Feel exactly the same way..

I really didn't have anything bad to say about Chelsea back in the old days – and then Jose came.. I also liked Inter – until Jose came.. Anyone see the pattern?

I truly believe that our beloved Pep and beloved Barca is gonna take it again this year (feels so good to say again :) !) Lets just hope Rosell don't screw it up!!!

                Barca.. Més que un club!

            • Zlatanista says:

I just want to add that the love between blaugranas and madridistas is great, but i feel compelled to dislike everything Jose touches, so…

Raul leaving Real doesen´t help either! Sad to see him go.

  35. Lisa says:

Even though I hate Real Madrid with a passion, I will miss these guys. They were around when I first started following La Liga in the mid-nineties, it is definately the end of an era.

By the way, kudos to Jose Mourinho and Real's PR department for making it look like these guys wanted out of the club; rather than the ugly truth of Jose FORCING them out.

Would it have killed Jose to have kept them around for at least one more season and give them the farewell they deserved?

    • anon says:

the reason jose didnt want guti was because he had publicly stated last year that he wanted out. and once you say something like that, you can no longer be included in the plans of a club. i dont really care so much for guti to be honest, especially after last season, i was prepared to see him go.

it's raul that breaks my heart. but raul left of his own choice because he wanted more playing time. jose would never force raul out, and i believe that because he adores older players – javier zanetti is 36. unfortunately for him, higuain and ronaldo are much more in form. Raul however would have been given a much more marginalized role, which he didnt want at this point. so please jose is not to blame and i support him fully as our coach.

i dont know how accurate the cmparison is, but even guardiola left barca for inter milan because he wanted to play more. and pep was just as big of an icon as raul.

      • Barcelista says:

They were both told that they were “free to leave”.. Yes Guti wanted out last year but Raul has never said anything like that and it kind of sends a signal from the club right..? If I was told by my employer that I was free to leave I would definitely be out looking for another job!

I don’t think it’s Jose though.. I believe Florentino is the one to “blame” in this particular matter.. Nevertheless I really think it’s sad to see two icons in spanish football leave (no matter how much I hate their former club)..

And as far as I remeber Pep left b/c he wanted to play in italy before he retired no..? :)

  36. Little Miss Arsenal says:

    Sad Raul–I dont like it

  37. tammyv says:
