Get Well Soon: Éric Abidal, Barcelona
Image via EQ
Barcelona defender and former Kickette Midweek Mmm, Eric Abidal, will undergo surgery on Friday for a tumour on his liver. The news was announced via Barca’s Twitter feed and has since been confirmed on their official website.
Abidal, who has made over one hundred and forty appearances for his club, has requested privacy and Barcelona have yet to confirm when the player might be expected to return. Several players, including Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, have sent messages of support via Twitter.
We would also like to offer our best wishes to Eric for a successful operation and quick return to the game.
UPDATE: This morning we also heard that former Manchester United and England legend Bryan Robson has been undergoing treatment for throat cancer. Once again, our best wishes to Bryan and his family at this difficult time.

The surgery is done and over….here's wishing Abi a speedy recovery and a good weekend!
My heart goes out to both of them. *Sends the best vibes*
eric, get well soon!
come back to barca QUICK!
we need you!
I agree that a tumor is bad news but at this point we don't know that it's malignant, right? There are tumors that aren't cancerous. Here's hoping this is the case with Abidal.
amino abidal…though you play for my enemy, i wish you the best. life transends footy and i wish you a safe and quick recovery…much love
All of the best wishes to him and I hope he gets well soon anc can get back on the pitch ASAP because he is an amazing player.
Anims Abidal <3
I totally agree with what you're saying. I love football like crazy, but I am first and foremost a human being, I do not care who the player plays for, it is another person for God's sake, and wishing someone harm just because he plays for another club is beyond my understanding. Anyone who's doing that is not a football fan, but a simple hooligan who excuses the idiotic behaviour by saying that it is because of the love for "his" club, shame on those people. They are offending their club too and its other fans, when they express those cruel opinions, when they cannot behave like humans with heart.
It should not even matter that I am an RM supporter here, who "dares" to also watch Barca games, just because I like seeing great games in the discipline I love, no matter who plays. The news made me sad, I really like Eric also, and I hope that it is nothing serious and he recovers soon!!!!
get well soon, honey, the whole kickette army is with you!
Did they?!?! I missed it! Good for them, though!
Yes, they did. Here's a photo

Real Madrid players STILL wore that shirt
it said 'Animo Abidal' and they even displayed it at the board at Bernabeu. I was really touched by that gesture as a Madridista. UEFA banned it but they still did it! Perhaps UEFA lifted the ban?
Get well soon Abidal!
i don't think they lifted it!
That just makes it even a greater gesture! May God bless Abidal with a quick recovery, he belongs to the pitch and every Cule wants that!
What I read was that UEFA banned it for before the game. So maybe it was okay after the game? Either way, it was a great gesture by both teams!
Get well soon Eric!!! Hopefully everything will go well with ur surgery!!
i am actually really disgusted by that. and embarrassed. that is plain evil.
oops! that was meant for Angela's comment!
my uncle had that…it was a somewhat painful recovery if i recall correctly
good luck to him, and toonns of good wishes to Robson, cancer is a scary thing.
WE LOVE U ABI…GET WELL SOON
MY POOOOR ABIDALTASAR!!! I just want to send my thoughts & prayers to him & his family(especially is 2 lil girls) …. his such a great person and player (even though he gets carried away sometimes) … I'm still in state of shocked… & with this situtation I just relize what a big culé i am … I heard the news.. I was heart broken… in shocked.. I couldn't believe it … I even started crying… It's moments like this that you know who the true fans of the sport/team/player are!!!!
I love seeing the comments from Aresnal boys …. especially Van Persie after the small incident….
I wish the UEFA would let Real Madrid & Lyon today wear the shirts … BUT nooooooooooo!!!ugh stupid ppl…
What is going on with this week? César Luis Menotti has an operation for lung cancer (my boyfriend nearly cried when I told him, that man is worshiped in Argentina), Bryan Robson has an operation for a cancerous tumour in his throat and now Éric Abidal is having an operation for a tumour on his liver (which, lo merece, might be benign).
If Real Madrid and Lyon wear the shirts tonight despite the UEFA fine, which Sid Lowe thinks they will, my estimation of both teams will go up immeasurably. How dare UEFA try to stifle people’s good wishes to someone who has spent his life in this sport.
exactly, its so heartbreaken .
- and ,really best wishes for Abidal.<3
This kind of news is when you realise to treasure each day as it comes, thankfully Abidal is in a profession with regular health check ups, hopefully this TUMOUR is not CANCEROUS, and if it is than atleast theyve caught it early, hopefully he'll make a full recovery! He really is an unsung hero in Barca team hes been having his best season. All the best To both Abi and Robson.
My heart goes out to you, King Eric! You will get through this, and come back stronger! Love!
Just to update, Eric's surgery has been moved up to Thursday.
Anims King Eric! We are all with you.
LOL those are not supporters, those are fanatics!
fanatics of ANYTHING are never right in the head!
The heartfelt comments to Abidal from other ballers have been really touching (Cesc and RVP sent well wishes, among others). All the best to Abi and his family. Take good care of yourself and get well soon!!! (and the same to Bryan Robson, as well.)
I sincerely hope Abidal and his family get the privacy they ask for and wish him a speedy recovery. The same goes for Robson. Fuerza, Abidal & Robson!
These kind of stuff really should make us more grateful for everything we have…I don't want to sound pathetic, but it's true.We take so many things for granted……..Oohh God now I need Lashes to cheer me up right now
))
))
No back to serious business ANIMO GRANDE ERIC ABIDALTASAR!!!
I hope they both recover fully from this! Best wishes and much prayer to both of them.
Poor Abi, our hearts are with you during this time, get well soon guys!
On a Swedish football website that I frequent a lot, there are tons of Real Madrid supporters writing horrible comments, about how they want him to die etc. I really, really hope that most Madristas are more mature than that, cause they really shocked me.
Im ashamed to share my passion for RM with those haters. We can be supporters but first and foremost we are all human beings.Get well soon éric, get well soon.
Thanks for your reply, I just wanted to know. I did not see a single caring RM supporter on that website and it really scared me. I'm glad to see that most supporters have hearts.
Sergz, I've seen many RM fans who are offering support and prayers to Abidal. I'm glad to say that site has a bad representation of Madrid fans.
^^this!
I saw on websites like Marca and As that really everyone is showing their support ( on coments section) ,and that are ,let's say-Madrid papers …Like Xavi said this is bigger then sport this is human life we are talking about…
When I heard the news it broke my heart, and as for all the players, Kaka Christiano and a bunch of other Madrid players expressed their prayers and wishes for him.
As a Madrid fan I express my prayers and wishes to him too. I pray for a speedy recovery,
Madrista from Canada
i'm glad to hear the boys are expressing support and overall being good role models!
and you're from Canada too? no way! i am on the same boat! A Madridista from Canada haha!
nice to meet ya!
third madridista from canada here!
it's horrible that some people have their priorities so skewed. i'm glad RM as a team stood united and supported behind abidal … shame some of their fan(atics) can't emulate their behaviour.
yaaaay! there's 3 of us!
and yeah, i posted a comment about fanatics before (but it got deleted *side eye*)
those people need to chill! talk about messed in the head!
If that is true that is so horrible.
I hope the surgery goes well and he has a speedy recovery.
The nerve of some ppl eh! How can some ppl be dat heartless?!
The guy has a tumour!!
I'm a real madrid supporter and i'm disappointed to read that about our fans. My heart just broke finding this out about Abidal, i'm sorry but i'm willing to put someone elses health above any champions cup any day! There will be many chances at winning a cup but there's only one chance at living life. Get well soon sending all my love to him.
How awful. I'm ashamed to share a love of the club with those haters, but not all Real fans are like that- peoplelike these shock me too.
Animo Abidal!
And get well soon Captain Marvel!!
Best wishes to both. xx
I wish them both a speedy recovery….
There's just too many horrible things happening in the world right now and it breaks my heart to learn about Abidal and Bryan Robson. Get well soon, boys.
I hope he has a quick and painless recovery, because news like this, is absolutely terrible and life-changing for anybody.
Get well soon Eric.
Good luck to Robbo. He's a lovely man and I hope his recovery goes smoothly. I've not met Abidal but good health to him, as well.
Wow – Cristiano Ronaldo has a heart somewhere behind all that Gucci and hair grease! Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mr Abidal.
Much love to Eric Abidal. I hope everything goes well and he returns to Camp Nou healthy, happy, and better than ever next season!
