Joey Barton: “Sweet & Tender Hooligan”

He’s never been one for cap doffing, but as former Smith’s frontman and renowned solo artist Morrissey approaches middle age, he seems to be embracing his hobby of perpetually piddling off the establishment with gusto. But while this kind of behaviour is actively encouraged in music and literature circles (the idea that we are only going to get more bitchy, unsympathetic and intolerant of frown lines as we age excites us more than we can say), in football, such behaviour tends to be frowned upon for obvious reasons.
Which is why we are utterly fascinated by the news that the renegade Mancunian has apparently requested an audience with none other than Joey ‘This Charming Man’ Barton, when he performs at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend.
Morrissey, not Barton.
JB, who has spent his footballing career challenging the authoritarian status quo by kicking people, getting into fights, showing his bottom to an unsuspecting public and occasionally scoring from free kicks, is said to be thrilled by the request, and we are certain that he is oiling his quiff in anticipation.
