John Terry: When Good Gossip Goes Bad

Think it’s fair to say that we would like to shove our fingers in our ears and sing “la, la, la,” rather than deal with this story.

Considering we rummage only in snark and footy private lives, we admit, this is unusual. But here’s why:

1. Because it’s straight up, messed up and ick-making to the highest degree. Damn, John Terry, you shoulda, coulda, woulda.

2. Because in a World Cup year we like to imagine a happy, united and unified team heading into battle.

3. Because this reminds us that the list of current England players – and in fact, footy players in general- that have had nasty extra-curricular activities reported, rumoured and whispered about is a skanktastic kilometre long.

4. It takes the wind out of our short tent story. (Hee, geddit?)

As the story develops and we can seperate truth from rumour more clearly, we will update with links below.

Side note: If this news is the “open secret” it’s rumoured to be, does that mean Toni Terry has known about this for some time?

Update with link about JT’s role as England captain: “If the requirement is for the best leader, the man who exudes the qualities required of a captain on the pitch, there remains no one better.” -  Captain Contradiction

Many people won't agree that's the case, though. With guest characters that bored us and story arcs that often failed to captivate audiences, plus romances that seemed either ill-conceived or dropped too quickly, the show lost its way at times.

  2. More of our thoughts to come below, but for now, let’s take a quick quiz break to see how well everyone has been paying attention to the Vanessa Perroncel PR money-grab campaign of glory. (Answers will be posted later today)

  3. Kat says:

OMG, color me shocked! *rolls eyes*

I’m not surprised at all, even coming from a Chelsea supporter like me. I know he has done worse things in the past, but sleeping with the ex of your close friend while your wife and kids are at home is something that just irks me.

I hope Toni (or, hell, Wayne) is the forgiving type because I doubt John will find the right words to amend an otherwise broken situation.

  4. Vlada says:

I’m not really surprised considering his history and Toni obviously has decided to live with his actions. I’ll only shake my head at the fact that it is a close friend and team mate’s girlfriend. Even Shaq hasn’t sunk that low, yet.

  5. Gigi Neville-Brown says:

Too bad that United is playing Chelsea on Sunday, cause that would be one mighty, distracted captain. But now who to captain England?

    • Gigi Neville-Brown says:

Meant to say, isn’t playing Chelsea. Damn the fact that there is no delete button.

  6. Erin says:

It’s one thing after another with this one. No surprise. Disgust, but no surprise.

  7. Liz says:

If she stays with him, acting like this shes a fool! Poor kids :(

  8. laz says:

seriously when did the great english gentleman turn into the great english jerk? i know that if footballers (regardless of nationality) play up to the common stereotype associated with football 'players' (which a huge number do and have done) they gain a complex that makes them think they can cheat and get away with it, however we seem to have an extremely large number of world class (and world known) players on the english football team who are or who have cheated at some point (Honestly considering that many of our english football players are well known across the world so naturally probably help form the basis of the english stereotype for many people from overseas, if other nationalities use our football players to help form their opinion of us english then i'm embarrassed to be english to be honest – that may sound harsh but from personal experience i think unfortunately there is some truth in it).

on the possible change in england captain – that's all well and good but name one big, long term who hasn't got a black spot next to their name? I don't think gerrard has cheated yet but he has other issues – the only relatively well known english player who can still pull off whiter than white image is walcott (please correct me if i'm wrong as i can't think of anyone else – perhaps david james?, i don't know)

  9. coleenfan says:

Gosh, this is a mess. I totally understand why you didn't want to write this, Kickette!! I will say this, I love John Terry – even though I'm not a Chelsea supporter, I think he's an awesome player and a good leader on the pitch for England. It sucks that he's now on the witch-hunt track with the media, and that this is going to be all over the papers for months. But man, he REALLY screwed up here. This is crossing lines even for footballers – and we know they're no angels – but a friend's gal? Too far. So sad for this.

  10. Lily says:

Are people truly suprised by this?? I mean really??? JT is a douchbag to the highest level and it’s not a secret of his playing away many many times. I don’t feel sorry for Toni because she knows. How could she not??? She turns a blind eye to JT’s misdeeds just like Cheryl Cole does to Ashley. They just like the lifestyle and they will compromise what little self esteem they have and a few jewels to stay with an unfaithful, douchebag of a husband. So needless to say, I’m not on the “poor Toni” bandwagon.

    • Der Lutscher says:

I'm sorry, but I think you are being too harsh on the woman. Cheryl Cole is a nation's beloved, so she doesn't really need her husband to provide any lifestyle for her, she can provide well enough for herself, so there's got to be some non-monetary reason for her to stay with A. Cole.

Now, Toni is a mother of two and it's always easy to judge and say: just take the kids and go, but it's not actually that easy in real life.

Besides, Terry is not the first cheater out there, but he is one of the few who manages to publically humiliate his wife…

      • Lily says:

Ok well whether you think I'm being harsh or not is your business. My opinion still stands about Cheryl Cole and Toni Poole. Thanks.

  11. aristeia says:

Not my team, so I assert my opinion carefully. It's kind of a snowball effect lately w/ Terry lately. I imagine Lamps could step in nicely as Chelsea captain, not sure if it'll come to that. But if Canna had an affair w/… say Gigi's gf Alena or Luca's gf Marta… I would be crushed. And. I wouldn't want him as captain any longer. But that's me.

  12. MrsC says:

I wish you wouldn’t post this, Kickette.

It’s ugly and it’s not anyone’s business but theirs.

    • Thanks for your comment Mrs C – we debated posting on this for a long time, because it felt ugly to us too – but we felt to not mention news that could in particular really impact the England squad didn't feel right either. x

  13. laura-8 says:

when they first said team-mates girlfriend i thought of Elen .. how could he do that to Toni and his team mate and how could Vannessa do that to her friends who have stuck by her whilst she lives in london and he’s in manchester

  14. SweetVito says:

I’m confused here, Kickette. When was this affair supposed to have taken place? I’m sure Wayne and his missus split up last year sometime…

Cry your way out of this one, John.

  15. Ella says:

This is just horrible. If it’s true, I just can’t ever look at JT the same way. I know athletes cheating is nothing new, but to do it with a teammate/friend’s girlfriend (allegedly) is even more disgusting. And it really bothers me more when people who have young children do this kind of thing. IMO, when you cheat, you cheat on your whole family, not just your spouse. Anyway, I hope these rumors are false and I wish them the best. It must be an awfully tough time for them.

  16. Sara says:

John Terry has one of the most scandalous pasts in football. Why are people trying to act like this is a surprise. The guy is a total jackass and always has been. The amount of douchebaggery he has been involved in over the years is massive. You’d have to be blind to ignore it.

  17. HiL says:

I agree with some here, to me it's not surprising at all.. i feel bad for his family. ugh.

  18. Mave says:

He has to go. There is no way the FA could ever command respect if he stays:

  19. FirstTeamCoach says:

I feel for Toni, however, she has had plenty opportunity in the past to deal with his ‘affairs’. Therefore she must have decided to ignore and continue with the lifestyle she has become used too.

When all his poor decisions are listed it does amount to a question mark over his integrity IMO. He is one of the best defenders around at the moment, but his decisions off the pitch are not matched by his decisions on the pitch.

He is by no means the only player to be a naughty boy – but he is captain of club and country so should at least try to be a little more discreet than the average EPL baller.

  20. carly says:

What a sickening story, sadly it didn't shock me much. There are so many revolting stories and I can only think of those poor kids that get mixed up in this sort of story.

Even though the focus of the story is more on JT…that Vanessa…ugh, no words. She is a mother – that should make a person think twice, or as many times as necessary, no? Terrible.

  21. melissa says:

I hope this isn’t true, because I respect him as a player, and as a person. But if it is true, I think there’s probably been worse scandals in celebrity world. I don’t think it will affect his reputation all that much in the long run. And I hope it doesn’t affect his world cup position and focus either.

  22. tammyv says:

They way I see it is that there is no way this is not true… for the case to have had that much time in the court system, NOTW's sources are rock solid.

The most interesting question is does Capello replace Terry? and if so with whom?

My money is on Garth Barry. He is Capello's No. 1 and he doesn't freak out the egos of everyone else.

  23. bam says:

Once a douche, always a douche. Plus he plays for an awful team.

  24. Riya (Come on you Re says:

    His poor children. :(

Honestly, I don't understand why people are surprised by all this. JT has done all sorts of wrong stuff before. This isn't the first time and it probably won't be the last.

  25. Der Lutscher says:

Well, it happened to the better men – Christoph Metzelder has knocked up his teammate's ex and they dealt with it.

However, as I understand, Terry still denies it, so it might be untrue after all. If it is, well, the guy is just silly, sorry, ladies.

  26. Cheryl H. says:

I have despised this guy since he mocked the 911 incident (along with his Chelsea pals – classy bunch) AND was fined by his club for it, so no one better try and defend him on it. Just another in a long list of imbecilities that reveal a deeply flawed, amoral character.

  27. suzie says:

Kickette….I couldn't have said it better myself. Even john Terry must know that banging a teammates wife behind his back is not a great team building exercise. I agree FTC about Toni, I'm hope the £150 grand a week she must be staying with him for is worth it because it wouldn't be for me. But when it comes to wayne I can't help think that it's a little bit of Karma coming round to bite him on the ass…..you know what they say "what goes around comes around". As an england fan it just find the whole seedy thing (and JT) a total embarrassment and I'm sure Cappello will too.
