Kickette Catch Up: Weekend Gossip Cheat Sheet

And what do we have here, USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra? Our guess is a flash mob for the ‘Men with Dubious Taste In Shirts’ Facebook Group. Image Source: Facebook.

Saturday

- Good news came from the Nou Camp ahead of our always needed work-day reprieve: Barcelona defender/French international Éric Abidal returned home to rest after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a tumor from his liver. Via the club’s official word on the matter: “The player was discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon and is now resting at home. The post operation process has been satisfactory in all aspects and no complications have occurred.”

- AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic was caught in another training ground bust-up; this time, he says, was just a case of ‘boys will be boys’ play fighting.

- Following a semi-interesting tryout with MLS side Sporting KC, one of the global football community’s biggest supporters/name droppers, Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson, has been asked to stay an extra day and play in a Kansas City reserves match.

Sunday

- Each day it seems Mario Balotelli takes a few giant steps towards the Manchester City door – this team he was caught throwing darts at the club’s youth team because he was “bored”.

- Real Madrid footballer Fernando Gago and his tennis playing girlfriend/fellow Argentinean Gisela Dulko announced that the two will marry this July in Miami. Image/Story spotted: ONTD_Football.

- Have you had your weekend dose of Marco Borriello yet? If not, take time to enjoy the view before dishing on your two-day dalliances.

P.S. – Don’t fret about the lack of Peter/air hostess/Abbey gossip in today’s weekend catch up. It’ll come in due time, Kickettes.

Damn Carlos… Look at them thighs. :D

  2. VS1986 says:

Am I the only one fantasizing about Boca in that pose…hand positioning and all…without his clothes on??? Sigh…

  3. Joana says:

Well Zlatan and "Chippen" are buddies, always messing around in interviews as well. So I wouldn't take that kick seriously. They also share something else, namely Oksana…Apparently dear old Ibra eh "knew" her before Chippen started dating her…

  4. Marika says:

Zlatan and Chippendale are like best friends and always joking around. They also make funny comments about each other. I don`t see nothing else in that video.

  5. Angela says:

Nah, Zlatan looks like he's just playing around. He's a martial artist and as a former martial artist, I can say that we tend to show affection with playful kicks and punches (lol). It looks scary to outsiders, but it's just fun and Chippen didn't look put off by it.

  6. AmeliaJ says:

I also believe the receding hairline behind Boca and Cherundolo is Landon Donovan. That hairline is easily recognizable. The other dubiously dressed dudes…no idea. I am intensely curious what the hell was going on when this was taken.

    • Audrey says:

I didn't even notice the hairline in the background, too much else going on in that picture! Good call on Hejduk and Dolo, heythere (although I think Frankie is done with the nats). I stand by my statement for the people in the foreground though!

  7. @DebStimson says:

I don't know about it just being about publicity. I saw a pretty good video of an interview with the coach of KC about Ochocinco. He seemed genuinely impressed with the guy.

    • I saw video of him looking dazed and confused just a few minutes ago. I think he might be realizing that American football in-shape is not the same as soccer in-shape.

  8. @VeiledHeart says:

Zlatan and Chippen were probably just playing around. They're BFFs 4Evah. lol. I can't imagine he'd ever wanna really hurt him. He's not Freddie or anything.

Chad Ochocinco was only interesting when he was hanging around Real Madrid. He can go back to doing whatever he was doing before.

  9. Tashinka says:

Reminds me of the time every year when the (American) football players at my high school would decide they were tougher than the soccer players and they would try out for the team en masse. Even in my urban midwestern school where few of us played before we were teenagers (i.e. we sucked), they didn't have the chops to make the cut. Not to mention the lungpower.
However, since Ochocinco was photo'd with Geri Piqué, I don't think I'll mind having him playing for my city's team (Sporting). Puts me one step closer to hotness!

    • @DebStimson says:

Even right after the world cup I read an article about whether soccer would ever be as big as "American football" in the US. Some of the comments were so ignorant even I was amazed. Like soccer player aren't good athletes, can't jump, can't run, can't even compete with the physicality of American Football. Obviously spoken by someone who's never really seen the game or played it. =|

    • Tashinka says:

One more point to Ochocinco (Ochoseis?). He waited on a city bus (not quite as punctual as some would like) just so he could get a taste of some local soul food. And took a photo with the restaurant owner.
      http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2011/03/chad_ochocinc…

However, recent reports suggest he's not going to be added to the roster here. From what I've read, he's actually quite happy just having had the chance to play. Good for him, I guess!

  10. mochara says:

When I saw this pic the first thing I thought was: "the world really has gone mad….."

  11. Elisa says:

True story: I almost died when Carlos Bocanegra (and the rest of the USMNT, for that matter) took the field for the USA vs. Argentina friendly on Saturday because it meant that I was actually in the same stadium as him. Unfortunately, due to issues involving possible hypothermia, they did not take their shirts off at the end of the match.

However, that photo never gets old. No idea who the other guys in it are, but Captain America…tsk, tsk.

  12. Sahar says:

So happy for abidal. Ochocinco does anything for publicity including getting engaged to an ex basketball “wife”. I feel sorry for kaka and Ronaldo they don’t know that Chad is all in it foe publicity.

I wish that was the Spanish national team ( actually any other national team) I know I’m in minority but USNMT does nothing for me.

  13. Crackers says:

So glad Abi had a successful operation, here's wishing him a speedy recovery and good health!

Those USMNT boys need to fix the problem of their horrible shirts by- you guessed it- losing the shirts.

  14. Leya_S says:

Yay, Abidal! I'm glad to hear (read) he's okay! I hope his recovery goes well and he's fully healthy in the near future.

Ohh, Boca. Lose the shirt, too, next time. It's Monday. We need this!

NFW, Ochocinco, playing on the reserves. I shouldn't knock this, bc generally speaking, athletes are good at a variety of sports. Hell, Abou Diaby almost became a professional handball player, I think it was. But SERIOUSLY? Ochocinco's time in his recreational soccer league as a middle schooler does not equate to the kind of training pro footballers in every other part of the world go through from the time they're potty trained (La Masia, anyone?). Just sayin'

  15. Lily says:

Zlatan should try MMA on his spare time. Chad Ochocinco, please stop trying and go back to the stands.

  16. FloraJane says:

I don't know much about the USMNT, but Bocanegra might want to rethink the clutching especially since it invites comparison to the guy on the left, whose non-clutched package is much more impressive! That guy should consider a strictly no-trousers policy at all times!! LOL And perhaps the guy on the right as well….

    • Audrey says:

Just for the record, the only USMNT player in that picture is Boca. No idea who the other people are, but I know who they aren't!

  17. chicagambeta says:

Kickette I'm interested that the photo credit is given to "Facebook"… is that how it works these days? So the image rights belong to the owner of the hosting site, not the photographer nor the models? Please ignore me if you meant Facebook is the source of the photo not the rights owner…Anyway this whole photo culture has always made me question who actually owns the photo. Very pertinent when you consider that anyone can take a photo or film of you with their mobile without you even knowing and post it on the internet and claim it as "their work of art"…..

  18. JA7 says:

Glad Abidal had a successful surgery!! Hopefully he will get back on his feet soon! :) on a side note, carlos u dutty, dutty boyy ;)

  19. nandosfreckles says:

Why is the Zlatan video not working? I WANNA SEE!
Anyway, that photo of Fernando Gago and his 'future' wife looks really cute, Shame about the dog getting in the way though.

Also, great news about Abidal :)

  20. Summer says:

Balotelli is simply a stupid, he will never change his behavior, worse than before. i have not words!!

    • Well said! I have tried to convince myself that somewhere deep down there is a good person who just needs to adjust to his new surroundings. The worst-attitude-ever-and-I-don't-give-a-damn-about-it award should go to him.
