Kickette Fail Files: Shirt Removal 101

YouTube Preview Image

Here at Kickette, our stance on FIFA’s rule for giving a yellow card for shirt removal is well documented. We’ve lost hours of sleep over it and so has Diego Forlan.

NAME OF APPLICANT: Eric Hassli

POSITION/CLUB: Striker, Vancouver Whitecaps

BUSINESS UNDERTAKEN: Failure to expose torso

CITED EVIDENCE: See above

In last night’s Vancouver Whitecaps v. New England Revolution MLS game, Whitecaps striker Eric Hassli had the opportunity to put his team ahead when they were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute. Eric slotted the penalty home and ran to celebrate with his team’s fans. As he approached the fans, he removed his jersey to reveal…. another jersey. Let that sink in for a moment. (Image via Reuters Pictures)

In keeping with FIFA rules, Eric was shown a yellow card, his second of the game, and was sent off. We recognize the momentary lapse in brains from him (and he does too), but we can’t get over the fact that he was wearing another jersey. If ‘ballers are going to remove clothing that will potentially cost their team the game, at least be wearing nothing underneath! Have we not suffered enough at the hands of this ludicrous rule?!

We need to lie down.

Thats Effed Up.FIFA HQ Should Change it .

  3. I really like your wordpress template, where did you download it through?

  4. Jane says:

Wasn't the same shirt. The outer shirt was long sleeve, the inner-shirt was short-sleeve. Nontheless, he should have took both off!

  5. Leya_S says:

Does anyone actually know the reason for this rule? Like removing your shirt does……..what, again? Entice on-looking Kickettes? Fine. But we're civilized ppl. We're not going to storm the field FFS!
Players could be strangled to death by Snoods; fine I get that. 2-footed tackle could kill someone; also makes sense. Arguing with the referee delays the game and is disrespecting authority; okay. But what is shirt removal doing that's causing everyone so much harm?!?! You're doing more harm by disallowing it, FIFA!!!

  6. mochara says:

Whaaat?? He should be given a medal not a red card, that's genius!! (although I am dissapointed by the lack of chest…)

  7. IheartSpain says:

Wow, this is so cool to see the Vancouver Whitecaps on Kickette. This is their first year in the MLS and Vancouver is psyched! thanks Kickette.

  8. Audrey says:

Baldomero Toledo (the ref) needs a Fail File, Kickette. He gave out 3 red cards in that game, only one of which was deserved.
Giving Hassli a second yellow for taking of his jersey was ridiculous, considering he had ANOTHER JERSEY underneath it. Letter of the law, yellow card, but spirit of the law, come on now. A little discretion please!
(And Hassli tossed the jersey he took off into the stands, which was cool of him even if no skin was shown. I think he was planning on doing that and figured if he had another jersey already underneath he wouldn't get carded for taking the top one off.)

  9. IrishBlue says:

Wtf…I'm not even gonna try and understand this man. Fail.

  10. Sarah, Madrid says:

I think this one deserve WTF! I said it before this is the silliest rule ever, who would the player hurt when he takes his shirt off? FIFA fail in everything in setting and ignoring rules.

  11. Amber says:

Oh Eric, trying to test this rule by wearing another jersey underneath is funny. Doing it while you’re carrying a yellow and getting your second red car in three games and costing your team the win? Epic fail!

  12. blake2108 says:

Worst part is that he clearly looks the type to have an amazing body under there

    • freckledtattoos says:

Oh, he does have an amazing body, he played for FC Zürich in Switzerland for years and took his shirt off some times already… ;)

  13. Elisa says:

So was he trying to make a statement by wearing the jersey underneath? I know that you play in Canada, Eric, but we have under armor for that weather.

And I love how removing your shirt is equal to recklessly tackling someone in a game, i.e. the same punishment was handed out when Xabi Alonso was de Jonged as when Iniesta whipped his shirt off in celebration of scoring the WC-winning goal. Sometimes I wonder if FIFA is intentionally trying to aggravate fans.

  14. nandosfreckles says:

What a stupid ref, it's not like he was showing anything (would've been so much better if he did though).

    • bri_saldana says:

I would have removed it AGAIN! He SHOULD have removed it again :D

      • Shama says:

I totally saw this on TV and thought the same thing!
Then I thought that this has to be on kickette and it WAS LOL

  15. dontaskmetosmile says:

This is why Grant Wahl should be voted FIFA president. He'd put a stop to this rule…

But seriously speaking, it's ridiculous that FIFA takes such a hard stance on this rule but refuse to take an equally firm stance on more important things like, I don't know, goal line technology? Racism in stadiums? Transparency on FIFA director compensation?

The footballing world would be a much, much better and bare-torso-filled place if the Kickette Army ran FIFA. Ugh.

    • You are so right. They could come down hard on the racism in stands if they wanted to. That makes me wonder if some of them share the same beliefs as the fans involved. I still don't understand the lack of goal line technology.

    • freckledtattoos says:

      You're so right! In all that you've said… :(

Kickette Army for FIFA presindent!! :D

  16. Miss XOXO says:

I think the referee is blind when he make the desicion…He dont know the different between the jersey is on or off…What the stupid judging.

  17. He for sure deserves a FAIL for that. If you're gonna do it, do it right young man! There's nothing good in removing a shirt only to expose another shirt underneath and denying women the chance to have their ovaries explode.
