Medicals, Love and Loyalty

image

imageWatching the lovely Xabi Alonso make his way through the Real Madrid medical, we got to thinking:

No, not about whether Xabi will be getting a painful spot wax upon removal of those monitors.

We’re wondering how our readers feel about players they love moving from the teams they support to a different club. Does your love follow with them? If your favourite player leaves for pastures new, are you done? Would you admire from afar?

We’ve discussed this before with a great response/debate and want to open up the chat on this topic again.

Certainly, we feel no shame in saying that if Iker Casillas decided to take up goalkeeping for a team called Anti-Champs & Stilettos we would weep, and then cut him off, occasionally (and only occasionally) returning to fluff our Iker-pillows in the guest room.  Then, after a restless night’s sleep, we would return to our senses and put the pillows back in our bedroom.

Of course, we’ve always been about the players – whilst most of you are about the game and the players.

Your thoughts? Remember, as always, to keep comments on topic, and within a reasonable level of snark on players/teams, and never on each other.

This one’s close to home for me being a ‘pool fan, but normally, if they don’t play for liverpool I follow the player. I loved Xabi ‘cos he was a liverpool player(like I do all our players) but now he’s gone my love doesn’t follow.I’ll check to see how he’s doing now and then but other than that-Xabi who?

  2. Lizzie A.K.A "The Kid" says:

Xabi. Shirtless. Nice. I’m gonna miss him so much!!! And the club always comes first!

  3. berbagirl says:

Club before a player, always, but I have to admit that my love for Cristiano is beyond and I’ll be keeping an eye on his achievement, but not Real, since I’m a Barca-girl… Let’s just hope he’ll be more for taking his white shirt off than scoring goals :)

  4. VR2BW-KASH says:

well ms fer lahm you can’t even spell the lad’s name and home is where ever you hang your hat so….. yea. while i’m upset with xabi i’ll love him 4eva and evaaaaa he’s my no.1 defensive midfielder and he gave stevie the best 5 yrs of his sexy life for that i’m greatful. however madrid i can;t support because i have 2 teams l’pool and valencia and when real tried to exploit valencia’s brokeness i said f*** you and they’re dead for me so i view this as xabi’s untimely passing (for now atleast)

  5. Jo says:

My club allegiance comes first. I may wish good things for some players who leave but I would not follow their club.

  6. mrs_Marianna_Torres says:

I’m the biggest fan of Liverpool(yeah,we’re THE TEAM)and I ‘m dissapointed we left such a good palyer to leave! But my favorite’s Nando!if he went to another team,i would support his team and forget Liverpool!

  7. eyes_on_nando says:

i’m a diehard liverpool fan and i can’t give them up, how could you turn your back on nando?? but i’ll be paying way more attention to la liga now because xabi is my number one - i’m sad to see him go but it was what he wanted and you have to respect that…

  8. Julia says:

Xabier? I don’t really care where you play anymore, buts just please, please go shave. OK?

  9. LoveLamps says:

Club first always, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow a player as well. If I had not followed Adrian Mutu, I would never have opened my eyes to Serie A and Fiorentina. It’s refreshing (and admittedly obsessive) to expand to other leagues and having a great player to follow makes it easier to learn and enjoy different leagues.

  10. Holyoke says:

I’m a Liverpool fan. When Michael Owen left for Real Madrid, RM became the Spanish team I cheered for. And then when he went to Newcastle I didn’t care for that but I liked it when they did well. And now, obviously I can’t cheer for him in Utd anymore, but if he scores their goals then I suppose its ok (provided we score more). I’m a Xabi fan too, so I suppose RM will be my Spanish team, although Liverpool is my priority.

  11. Belle says:

Definitely club before player. I still keep an eye on our old players I had a particular fondness for, but there’s always new players who come in who pretty much take their place. The whole Xabi situation is so tough though – I love him so much and hate the fact he won’t be with us anymore. I’ll wish him well for Spain NT, and hope he enjoys his football and stays injury-free and stuff, but I just don’t want success for Real Madrid because I hate what they’re doing – a team should be built not bought, IMO…

  12. Beth says:

omg this is a tough one. I’m am a huge liverpool fan and really only a liverpool fan – with a peek at iker and occasionally the ramos, and i will watch the spanish national team. However, Xabi was my first big football love/crush and i wont ever be able to forget that and him, and he is the reason i started following spain and saw iker etc. I will always fancy the pants off him but it will be so painful every time i see him in a madrid shirt, and if liverpool ever have to play him – it wont seem right. So i think liverpool first, and i will love him a little bit less because he didnt stay, but i wont just forget about him.

  13. MissChelsea says:

Club comes first! (Chealsea that is Free Smileys )

  14. Liz (Mrs. Vucinic) says:

I don’t watch La Liga all that much so I probably won’t follow him. Maybe in a month or two I will wish him well, at the moment I’m still a bit angry/upset/whatever.

As much as I loved Xabi at Liverpool, there is no way I’d drop one of my teams (Liverpool or Roma) because a player had gone somewhere else. I love the team and then the players.

  15. zo-tl says:

Definitely club. I was suicidal for days when Kaka left Milan, and I’ve always maintained that I will never love a player like I do him, but loyalty counts for something. And even with slim prospects for this season and that godawful Berlusconi, Milan rules my heart and I’d be Milanista for life. So, for the record I hope he does well, scores many goals but Madrid lose, so he gets frustrated and returns, because home is where the heart is and his heart is quite obviously at Milan. And I sincerely hope Barca win La Liga, again and again. crazy

  16. Dreamgirl says:

Like a lot of the ladies said, player lust/admiration is one thing but club allegiance is quite another. There is no way the support for a club could ever hang on a player. You can change your spouse and your friends but never your football team.

    Manchester United forever!!!!

  17. goalkeeperette says:

I say the love for the person stays, but the support of the player goes (even more so if he moves to a rival club or within the same league). The only baller I kept on following (in terms of playing, not lusting ;) ) after his departure was Thierry Henry, and he actually made me like Barcelona.

  18. Mexoz says:

Well … I support Real Madrid so no problem for me this season so far !! But looks like we caused lots of tears among some fans out there raspberry j/k
But seriously .. I always admired CR and I tried to catch his matches with ManU but I never was fan of the club .. even though to be honest lately it started to grow on me the love of the club but it wasn’t long till Real Madrid signed him up so I’m now like Man.United who ?

  19. TammyV says:

This is where being a country over club girl comes in handy…I can follow my boys around the globe from club to the club, country and it not really affect me

  20. Cherry says:

I’m a long time LFC supporter and was a huge Xabi fan. Because of the way he behaved, dragging this out all summer, waiting until the last minute and calling Liverpool “worse” in a “for better or worse” statement, he can kiss my ass.

  21. Kate says:

I have to say I will support him even if he’s not red anymore… I’m a Liverpool fan and it was heartbreaking to see him training with Real yesterday but I know he’s happy and that it was his dream to play for Galacticos so I have to respect it…

  22. gg says:

And some people call themselves “fans” of the team? Clubs don’t need “fans” who stop supporting the club after their favourite player leaves. Xabi is my favourite player but my love for Liverpool, is above any player. I will still keep tabs on news about Xabi but I wouldn’t ever wish success for Real because I am against their principles.

I couldn’t agree more with Melissa. A lot of people on here seem to be fair weather fans (only because the player they like is there). You can’t call yourself a “fan” of Liverpool just because Fernando Torres plays there.

  23. Liz says:

I’m upset that he left but I still love him. I’ll probably still follow him but I WONT support Real Madrid just because he is there, after all Iker was there first and I still didn’t like them.

  24. Josie says:

As a football supporter first I would never follow a player away from United..I just can’t. When Becks left it was sad to know that I wouldn’t get to enjoy him taking his shirt off as often, but my love for Manchester United is greater than the love for any player. I love all United players and support them as long as they are United players, in the case of Becks I settled for supporting him while he played for England smile

  25. Melissa says:

as a liverpool and xabi fan, My love will follow xabi, and stay at liverpool. I am a die hard Kopette, but i am also able to understand that he prolly wanted to go home, and have Jon grow up in spain.

I will always suppost real anyway, altho now that that means support cristiano as well (ew.) but if they play liverpool, xabi will get insulted along with the rest of them.

but when he plays for spain?? te amo xabi!

  26. Michelle says:

In this case, I’m both a Liverpool and Real Madrid fan, so I can still love Xabi.  I think it depends on what club a player goes to.  If he had transfered to Man U or Barca, the love would be gone.  There are always exceptions…even as a Real fan, I loved Fernando Torres.  So glad he is at Liverpool now!

  27. Ella says:

My lust might follow, but my Love does not.  I no longer love Ronnie b/c he’s gone to Real Madrid, but when I see pix of him shirtless, I’ll still appreciate like I always did.

  28. Katta says:

I’m a huge Liverpool supporter and sadly Xabi was my fave. No he still is. No I have to follow my love team and another one. What ever. Xabi will stay my no. 1 for sure!

  29. Boston Red says:

I was Carlos Tevez’s biggest cheerleader throughout last season. Regardless of the team he went to (which I dislike, obvi) he just acted like such a jacka** that I could care less what he does now. I would never change my loyalty to my club for a player. That’s ridiculous and it doesn’t make you any sort of a football fan. There are plenty of United players who I still like – Smithy, Pique, Ruud (Oh Ruudy I still miss you), but calling myself a fan of their clubs is not going to happen.

  30. gunner-chica says:

for me its a no-brainer..Arsenal first,no player is gonna make me stop rooting for the team i’v loved for 12 years..but i would just DIE if cesc were to leave!!still, thierry left and he’s still the best player in the world in my eyes
    .)

  31. shelby says:

club and favorite player are about on par for me. rm is my club and i’ll never support another club over them but xabi is my favorite baller. when he joined ‘pool instead of rm back in the day, i “adopted” ‘pool as my epl team. i have to say i never really warmed to them and it was tough to have to cheer for them, but i did it. now that xabi’s at rm, club and player have united and i feel like x’mas came early smile

  32. shay says:

I am still a Cristiano fan but never a Real Madrid fan. I will always put my love of Manchester United above any player. And this depite that fact that Cristiano is the reason I became a Man Utd fan in the first place.

  33. Melissa says:

and btw, by support, I just meant root for in La Liga. I can’t consider myself a Real supporter since I don’t own a jersey, let alone 6 like I do liverpool/USA/Spain. But I’ve followed them through the first Galactico phase, and ever since I got into footy.

  34. Melissa says:

If your considering giving up on a team after a couple years of crappy ownership and a slightly tempermental coach, I don’t know if you can really call yourself a fan.

As an American (and proud of it thankyouverymuch) I know all about crap owners of sports teams since I live in DC. The Redskins owner is quite possibly the worst in the world, but I don’t blame my team for it. And I will be a Skins fan til the day I die, no matter who comes, who goes, win or lose. That’s a true fan. I go out to the games, rain, shine, hot, cold, sleet, holiday, illness, perfect health.

As far as LFC goes, I don’t particularly agree with that ownership situation either. But the poor players cannot help it. And that’s who I support. And as far as no ambition, I think they have plenty. They want to win the Premier League like nobody’s business, and I think Crotchety Fergie lit a fire under our butts. On top of that we are always a contender for the Champion’s League.

On top of that, I honestly don’t believe you are going to be supporting Real Madrid because that’s where Xabi went. From your post, you appear to be a fair weather fan, and are going to choose the Galacticos cuz with all those great players, how can they not win everything next year? I feel bad for Real fans because I think with the egos that are loaded up on that team, they are gonna be utter crap this coming season until they can learn to work together. I think I’ll stay LOYAL to Liverpool, but watch a Real game or two if I can find nothing better to do.

  35. FAREED says:

    In Xabi’s case it’s different.
The fact that Rafa had wanted to offload him, two seasons back, might have triggered his decision to leave.
Alonso is kind , loyal ,and a perfect professional-He proved it last season even if he felt he was not “wanted’ at Liverpool.
If Rafa said that Alonso was NOT FOR SALE-Alonso would have still been at LFC.
I understand Xabi has been hurt by Rafa’s attitudes,
but Alonso is a GREAT player and I like him and will always watch him and follow his career.
I wish him all the best.
I was a Liverpool fan and now I am considering of supporting Real Madrid next season.
I am fed up with Rafa and his Americans and a club that has no AMBITIONS.

  36. Prncss_SuperStar says:

PS. I forgot to add, he is really cute!! *smile*

  37. Prncss_SuperStar says:

I cant still believe her left! Its so tragic. He was amazing last year and is ball control and passing is spectacular. Xabi(me babi, as i like to call him!) was my favourite liverpool player and I am really sad that he has moved on and to be perfectly honest I dont bame him for wanting to move after Rafa tried to sell him for Gareth Barry (WTF??) I will still follow Xabi and will make a trip to Madrid to see him play for the Galacticos!

  38. MeLovesFutbol says:

I dont think theres anything wrong with supporting team and player. I mean, cant you stay loyal to Liverpool while still admiring Xabi from afar?

  39. Nando's Ma says:

A true supporter’s team should always come first, last and everything in-between. I was born a Red and will die one but that doesn’t stop me hoping ex-Liverpool players (hot or not) do well after they leave us, as long as they don’t slag the club, fans or Rafa off. I hope Real Madrid fail spectacularly this year but that Xabi and Arbeloa have great seasons regardless.I’ll miss seeing the ever-so-delectable Xabi with a liver bird on his chest but I understand why he wanted to get back to Spain and I’m just glad he didn’t go to an english club

  40. SamGunner! says:

For me if i love a player, i love a player. Even if someone i loved moved to club which i hated, i cant help it! Personally i dont really like liverpool anyways and i prefer Real Madrid so its a win win situation for me lol.

  41. Nuts over Nando says:

Liverpool is the one for me. I love Xabi Alonso, but I hate Real Madrid so a little bit of the love is gone. If he’d moved to Barcelona though, I’d still be as huge a fan of his as ever. But que sera sera.. Though I still will retain a little bit of affection for him as a member of the Spanish national team.

  42. Megaann says:

Im gonna miss Xabi, but not enough to start supporting Real Madrid. The only person that, if they moved i would support the team they moved to, is Nando Torres (Cuz I’m kinda obsessed with him haha) Until The Day That Nando Decides To Leave (I Hope That Day Will Never Come), Liverpool Is The Only Team For Me.! =)

  43. Malin says:

This is always interesting, I reckon. For me it depends very much on who the player is. Some of Arsenal’s players I lose most interest in when they leave even though I support them whole-heartedly while they’re at the club. Others…are more difficult to let go. The reason I became an Arsenal fan to start with was Freddie, and when he left the club I was worried about if my feelings for the club or him would change. But I’ve come to realise that he’ll always be very special (in so many ways) but the love for the club remains. It’s the team that is most important to me and I would never just…change teams. But of course, I still don’t mind keeping an eye on special players even when they’re at different clubs.

  44. bubbly_cheryl says:

this is a really intriguing topic, because as Ms Kickette, put it, some players i can’t imagine wearing a different shirt, but way i think about it, being a footie fan- my love, loyalty and life will always be with manchester united, i love the players as well, but if they leave and i loved them, i either find a new fav baller or just following him and not his new team

  45. izzy says:

I am a Manchester United Supporter first. I can admire Iker from afar, but ultimately i loath Real Madrid. When Cristiano left for them it was a breakup for sure. I’ll appreciate pictures of his 1/2 naked body, but that’s where it ends. (Yes I need to change my picture, but breaking up is hard to do!)

  46. imhereforthenando says:

Without Xabi, it will be very difficult for Liverpool, and for me. I loved him, until he went to Real Madrid, that is. You just can’t carry on loving someone who goes and plays for a rival if you ever loved the club. Maybe I’m just in the phase of Xabi love where I’m more hurt than angry; seeing the photo of him getting the medical felt like a knife through my heart. I suppose that I hope he does well, but not too well so as to interfere with Liverpool’s European ambitions. And I also think that I will step up my cheering for Barca.

  47. BarcaGirl says:

I’ve been a Bar?a and Messi fan since day ONE. I’d still support Bar?a if Messi were to leave (which I highly doubt. hahaha. He’s practically the spanish equivalent of Maldini.) Anyways, my continued support for Messi will depend really on which club he goes to. I’ll fully support him (but Bar?a will always come first), should he move to a club which I feel has the same, if not, better, calibre than Bar?a.

  48. Wazza's Freckles says:

This is a tough one for me because it was watching Wayne in the World Cup that brought me to United. I haven’t been a supporter for years and years like some here. I am just happy that I am not faced with a choice at present.

I do feel sympathy for the Liverpool ladies who are suffering. Many a night I have sat with my daughter and held her hand while she wept over some thoughtless boy who dumped her. Something similar, no?

  49. The Fourth Official says:

When you love a club (really LOVE it) you don’t switch allegiance because your favourite player moves on. I was fortunate that when Roy left in 2005, he went to Celtic. I could (cheerfully) support him there. He didn’t want to play in the same league as his beloved United (not many players would have such scruples today!).

That’s not to say that I haven’t cried over players leaving. Roy obviously. Mark Hughes to Barcelona in 1986 was a heartbreaker. But I always wish them well. Only Paul Ince, and now, Carlos Tevez, have left me feeling very angry towards them. There is a way to leave a club with dignity and class, and there is a way to leave looking like a jackass. If a former player behaves with respect towards the club in his post-United years, I have no problem with him.

  50. Barcelinha says:

well, i don’t like Xabi that much, but it still breaks my heart that he chose to go to Real, since i’m a huge Barca fan. that being said, when Becks moved to Real, i not only cried and stashed away all his pics [didn't burn them cause some had Brooklyn and i didn't feel like burning an innocent child] but i was poised to hate him. i never managed to, he’s just too damn awesome. but anyway, club is ALWAYS first, no matter who the player is. i usually prefer if my fav players are at “friendly” clubs, but if they happen to play for the bastards, so be it. i’ll still drool over the occasional pics, but that’s it. don’t ask me what would happen if Bojanny ended up – somehow – at Real, cause i personally think the world would implode!

  51. Fer_Lahm says:

    Welcome home Xavi Alonso

  52. lee says:

am a football fan because i LOVE players. how they look, how they think and how they play = Xabi Alonso. i love teams too, however. as bono sings, for XABI: i will follow! – but will still watch liverpool, which is my fave: for torres. funny though, gerrard has not said anything about the xabi transfer trauma like carragher and torres have. i wonder why he can’t be bothered.

  53. xasglv1 says:

I will follow Xabi until he hangs up his boots. It’s unbelievably sad he left but I will not stop being a huge Xabi fan. Forever.

  54. HiL says:

I think it depends. For me like when Gerard Pique left to Barca a while ago I was sad because I really admired him but I still love him. But there are other cases like Carlos Tevez.. Amazing player I really loved him and I wish he would have had a better time in United, but he decided to leave to City.. and that just annoyed me. I appreciate him much less.

  55. chelseagal_joeycoleswife says:

You may not be able to tell, but i love Chelsea ;) and if worst came to worst and one of my favourite lads left, then it would just be too bad. With Lamps last year i honestly thought he was leaving for inter, but that would have been his decision and as much as it would have made me cry into my pillow every night for the rest of eternity, i wouldnt stop following him or dislike him, it would just make for time taken to spy on his thighs to become a more lengthy process, same goes for JT and City-even though he was never reallllly going- it would have just softened my views on city even more after bridgey and SWP left. But if Joe Cole left for another side, I’m afraid it would mean a second team to support! even if it was spurs…eeesh

  56. annarose says:

Club before player for me. I’d probably still watch the player if I was really into it, but definately, once you choose your club your loyalties should lie no where else really? So sad Xabi’s gone. End of an era. :( Anyone know anything about this Aquilani bloke?

  57. Didi says:

Well I tried to find another favourite footballer- you know you feel it he`ll leave, but I couldn`t. I think I won`t be able to get over the fact he signed for Real, but I`ll defenatly follow him when he`ll play for his national side and if Real draws us in the CL. It makes me wish we`ll get the CL trophy on Bernabeu even more. The forst thing I noticed here was his arms on the second picture and then this thumbs up kills me. It did when I saw a clip on as.com

  58. kenita says:

i wish the players that leave all the best( ok there’s some exceptions, i admit that) , but my loyalty is always with the team, not the players

  59. jh09 says:

he’s the reason i fell in love with liverpool :( i’ll be following xabi (plus iker and the rest of the sexbomb squad) at real and liverpool will remain my #1 epl team. le sigh.

  60. trojanette21 says:

I will always follow Xabi no matter where he goes, even if it were to MAN U… I am a devoted Pool fan and Barca fan, so this is a lot for me to support Xabi going to Real…

  61. nicki says:

For me club always comes first, and I would not stop supporting my club just because a favorite player left, but I rarely have just one favorite on my team, i usually love them all. If a player I love does leave depending on where they go I still follow them, but my support for the club they play for depends on the club beyond the player. Sometimes good can come of it, I never watched Serie A much until The Special One took over at Inter, now after a season of following the league closely it is becoming one of my favorites. Since I believe it is possible to support more than one club in different leagues I think at least paying attention to where a loved player goes can open up new interests.

  62. mrscudicini says:

I’m a Chelsea girl through and through. Just getting on the District line to Fulham Broadway is a religious experience for me. The thought that John Terry would ever leave us made me nauseous. I love my lads, even you and your unibrow, Bos. But I’m also a red blooded girl, who sneaks over to watch Liverpool because Fernando Torres makes me weak, and have weekly Real Madrid therapies because Iker is heaven. I find this at no time a conflict of my Chelsea loyalties. When we play them, well, Nando’s ankles are fair game, JT- TAKE HIM OUT!!! (just not the freckles, ‘kay?) However, there are times in a Kickette’s life when football deals you a nasty blow. IE- they sell your future husband to the team you HATE. Seriously. Could Chelsea have hurt me ANY worse than to give Carlo to Tottenham? *sigh* So what do I do? Sneak over to White Hart Lane in dark shades and continue to worship my man, JT forgive me. It’s Chelsea’s fault, after all.

  63. Dani.Mrs Jos? Manuel Reina (PLQ) says:

:( good luck at RM Xabi ill miss you

  64. truly_thata says:

WELCOME BACK TO LA LIGA AND YOUR NEW HOME IN BERNABEAU!

  65. FirstTeamCoach says:

I love my team and club first and foremost. When my fav player left, I still follow him but I would never ever be classed as a fan or follower of his club. Like others have said, depends on the player. When Cris left united, I wish him well, but I dont want to see RM do well. Tevez – because of the way he acted I could not give a toss. Smithy I still love, and always will, but not necessarily for footballing reasons.

  66. sassy says:

As a Liverpool supporter I have always had a special place in my heart for little Mickey Owen (when he is not talking of course;-) a fact that I could just about bare when he warmed the Newcastle bench, but now, everytime I see him playing for THAT team, in THAT shirt it makes me want to vomit…and then give him a one. Y.N.W.A

  67. wanniemelon says:

    *sob… sob…. sob*

  68. Louise says:

I followed Canna to Real Madrid, but that man is worth it. And he led me to Iker. I am a Liverpool supporter, so I wish Xabi had stayed, but now that I follow Real Madrid (I can’t leave Iker), I’ll keep an eye on Xabi (and his ginger beard).

  69. aristeia says:

I really watch too much footie. I’ve supported Roma my entire life; Liverpool for most of it. I believe that I’m a Valencia fan, but not a diehard (I only say that b/c I don’t feel I’ve put in the time or effort that other fans do). In the last few years, I’ve started watching and supporting Celtic. But again, I can’t really claim hardcore fandom. That’s reserved for Roma & LFC.

My teams come first, but I’ve been fortunate to support 2 teams that inspire a lot of loyalty. Be it by homegrown players or imports. Then again, when long-term or favorite players leave, it hurts so much more. It depends entirely on the player of course, but some players are dear to my heart and I will always watch their career. Ie. I always like to see Crouchie do well (as long as it’s not against us).

When it comes to Xabi, I don’t think I could ever hate him. But right now, I’m not so happy w/ him– I won’t go into here. I’m sure w/ time that will fade, but it depends on how things develop. If he is introduced as a RM player and kisses their badge, well then… yeah, anyway.

  70. aristeia says:

WF, I hope your daughter has found herself a real man. No more tears! Xabi going feels like a relationship coming to an end, you can feel your partner pulling away and then you go off and have one last great time together. It’s bittersweet to say the least.

  71. Katie says:

Liverpool is my club, so my loyalty has to stay with them. I was gutted when I heard that Xabi had actually left (till then I’d tried to convince myself it was just rumours and paper talk), but I’m starting to come to terms with it a bit now! I’m going to miss Xabi (he was so pretty to look at), and I’ll still admire him in the national team but it just won’t be the same now. It’s like I also love Gerrard, but if he had have left Liverpool for Chelsea in 2005…I would have loved no more!

  72. Becca says:

    Im gonna miss Xabi !
I cant say im gonna follow him, but if Frank Lampard left Chelsea it would be a completely different kettle of fish. I think i would probably have to move to the country that he was playing in, just so i could watch… Is that a tad obsessive?

  73. Nina (Mrs Gerrard) says:

Liverpool is my one and only no matter what. Still it is hard to watch a player leave, especially a player like Xabi *sob*. To any departing player I wish good luck and all the best, however, my loyalty still remains with the club.

  74. DC says:

Liverpool is number 1 for me but Real Madrid is pretty close behind them in my heart. of course i was sad when Xabi left….really sad…but I have no problems with it. still love him. and both clubs.

  75. Kat says:

Obviously, Chelsea comes first and my love of the players knows no bounds. At the same time, if a player decides to leave the Blues on the grounds that they want better first-team opportunities or something to that chagrin, I will respect that (albeit a bit begrudgingly at first).

The same thing goes with the American players that come and go from the EPL (that I keep tabs on from time to time). While I don’t really want to see any of them leave, I know that there will be a day that they want to return to the US or they want to broaden their playing career by joining a team outside of the EPL and I accept that as well.

  76. Avenath says:

Liverpool will always be my first love and no player is bigger than the club…i would most probably keep a tab on Alonso and see how he’s doing, but that is most probably it…i will surely miss him and all that he’s done with the club, but he’s moved on…and we should too…

  77. Kelly says:

and this is why i always say its best to sit between your loved one who supports ‘pool and your loved one who supports manchester with a big bottle of jack. no hurt feelings there. very tingly ones, maybe, but all around awesomeness instead of heartbreak/anger.

  78. FootballerChick43 - "Mrs.Ballack" says:

My love follows a player wherever he goes, but thats not to say that I don’t have team loyalties. I’m a Chelsea girl through-and-through, and the day Michael Ballack joined Chelsea was the happiest day of my life. If he joined Manchester United, for example, I probably would have wept, but still followed him.

  79. Erin says:

    *avoids looking at photos above*

I support Liverpool and only Liverpool. If a player I like leaves my club, then I may watch them occasionally and typically wish them well, but I don’t change allegiances because of it. With Xabi’s move, I don’t want him to win things with his new club and I certainly won’t support Real Madrid. But I will always think Xabi is sex on a stick. *sob*

  80. carly says:

I’m pretty much an authority in this subject, I’m afraid. Wish I wasn’t.
After losing 4 of my favourite players this Summer to clubs that aren’t as good as my own I was left with the following scenery:
-I now have to follow/perve on several different leagues/clubs.
-I obviously didn’t stop loving the players, as long as they don’t badmouth my club, which very few players dare to do – those who did like that a** Diego and than even bigger a** Fabiano are forever out of my love list.
-The sadness and the despair goes on for a while. When I see my teams without them there is something very serious missing.
-It gets better with time and the Club remains.
-New players seem awful at first but you’ll quickly warm up to them.
    -Sometimes football really sucks.
