Mr and Mrs: Yakubu Ties the Knot

image

Everton striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni got married last week in Lagos, Nigeria to his fiancee Yvonne.  High profile footie guests in attendance included Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu.

Following in the admirable baller tradition of stretching out the extravaganza as long as poss, the couple had two shindigs, a traditional one and then a white wedding ceremony a few days later.  We ask that you take note of the pic below, which shows the subtle and glamorous touch of having a massive billboard-sized photograph set up as a decorative reception backdrop.  This may come in handy later in the evening when guests are too drunk to remember where they are.

Random: We’ve had the pleasure of attending a London-based Nigerian wedding a while back, and it was one helluva party, we can assure you. Hands down, our favourite part (aside from all the dancing and eating until you can’t move) was during the reception, when random wedding guests surrounded the bride and stuck money on her forehead.

We were gobsmacked and giddy with delight by this brilliant spectacle.  EPL Wags, we implore you to consider this fabulous custom.

Now onto some loved up sweetness from the groom:

“When I wake up in the morning and see her face it makes me happy.  I go for training and play a match with happiness in my heart. That is the motivation that makes me play well.  When I am doing something that may not be right she is the one to tell me. That is a relationship. Not the kind where it is all about the man all the time. I am just lucky to have her. I am enjoying it and I expect us to be together for the rest of our lives.“

Congratulations!

Kickette-That doesn't just happen at weddings. It happens at many African parties. Basically-in the tradition, if money touches you, it's yours! Ok, I digress. The bride looks very very pretty in these pictures. Congrats to both!

I cant belive she is black, have you darkened the picture in photoshop, she must be blonde.

Bin laden is likely to the king of england, because black men date whites only.

  11. Addie says:

Actually, it’s a pretty common Nigerian tradition to have a traditional ceremony and a Western ceremony.

    The bride looks beautiful!

He sounds like a sweetheart. Has he always been that cute or is it the tribute to his wife that's turned my head?

Ballers seem to have gone all soft and mushy during the off-season but I'm loving all the sweet words about their other halves. The custom of sticking money to the bride's forehead sounds fun…it's always interesting to learn about other cultures. I have to say that the billboard-sized photo is a bit tacky though.

Christ, another genuinely happy footballing couple…what is the world coming to! :) I too have been to a Nigerian wedding…fun times, fun times :) However, with this particular wedding I’m a little taken aback by the HUGE photo of the couple on some kind of gigantic banner behind them in the photo of the wedding party. A nice WAG-esque touch :)

Everything and everyone looks fantastic! The best part is that Yakubu really seems to have a firm grasp on what makes a great long-term relationship, and specifically a marriage that lasts. I want a man exactly like him — what a sweetheart with a good head on his shoulders. I’m so impressed with him! Best wishes to the lovely couple! :) xoxoxo
