Pitter Patter: Raul and Mamen Celebrate Their Fifth

Raul and Mamen

Real Madrid’s Raul and his wife Mamen are the proud parents to their first girl, born this morning in Boadilla del Monte, Madrid.

The baby has been named Maria Gonzalez Redondo, weighed 2.9 kilos and apparently measured to be a freakishly long 48 inches. Do the math – surely the Spanish press meant 48 cm? If some off chance the ruler measuring checks out, Mamen will be confined to her bed for a year recovering from that birthing procedure.

Nonetheless, Maria is soon to be spoiled until she can’t be spoiled no mo’. Lucky.

A huge congratulations to the family!

    Finally, a girl! :)

  2. Sarah says:

I have a feeling that girl is going to be spoiled rotten. Or a total tomboy.

Also, imagine when she gets to dating age. That’s gotta be ridiculously intimidating for any guy who wants to ask her out…four older brothers and her dad is Raul!

    Congrats to them :)

But just Maria? That’s pretty plain, I’m assuming they gave her a middle name too but they just won’t tell the world… right?
I have Maria in French as my middle name. Yey.

    • Maria says:

Mmmmm… I think it’s just Maria. My name is just Maria too. Here in Spain is not so common to have a middle name.

“Mamen” is an abbreviation for “Maria del Carmen”. So… yes, Mamen’s name is partly Maria. But here in Spain, is quite common to add “Maria” in women’s name (even men’s!). Actually, I have 8 aunts and all of them (and my mum too) are called Maria Whatever (Pilar, Victoria, Carmen…). Maria is a kind of “subordinate” name. I mean, if you are “Maria Whatever”, people would probably call you for an abbreviaton, or just “Whatever”.

Mmmm… I hope I haven’t bored you with my explanations xD

    Congratulations, Raul and Mamen!!!

    P.S. My name is… Maria

Maria, 2 of my uncles (Francesco & Enrico) have Maria has their middle names. It’s common in Italy too. :)

  11. Maria is such a “vanilla” name…Not my cup of tea but much better than Apple and stuff…Congrats to the couple, I bet the little girl will be spoilt rotten, in a “good” way.

  12. Rusty (Mrs Clemens Fritz) says:

48 cm isn’t *that* tall for a baby. I think I was taller at birth.

  13. FootballerChick43 - "Mrs.Ballack" says:

Uhhh… did someone tell them that 48 inches tall is 4 feet tall? Meaning that she’s the same height as my 10 year old cousin? Am praying they meant 48 cm.

    Congrats to them, though!!!

  14. hoda says:

  16. Rusty (Mrs Clemens Fritz) says:

I *hope* Maria was only 48 cm. 48 inches sounds painful.

  17. Ella says:
