QOTD: Pep Guardiola on Jose Mourinho

Careful Mou. He might look like a pussy cat, but he bites hard. Image: Reuters/Daylife

Off the pitch, in the press conference room, Mr Mourinho is the f****** leader, the f****** boss, the person who knows everything about the world and I do not want to compete with him.

He can have his championship off the pitch, take it home and enjoy it. Let him read Albert Einstein, let him read what is written by the friends of Florentino Perez (Real’s president). We are happier with smaller victories on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola responds to comments made by Jose Mourinho in a pre-Champions League semi-final press conference. And so it begins…

Better to be feared than loved.

    i still love pep!
mourinho is like mojo jojo..god bless him

  3. Josie says:

Jose is using Machevellian tactics. He is a big fan of Machevelli. All his inflammatory comments should not be taken seriously. They are strategically designed to undermine his opponents. It is best to ignore them. Pep learned the hard way and appropriately ignored Mourinho's complaining about the refs.

Hopefully Mourinho gets what is coming to him from UEFA. I hated him when he was at Chelsea and I hate him even more now. I feel sorry for his wife and friends. If he has any friends and I dread the day he returns to England. I'm going to invest in some good earplugs.

With classy Pep as the Champagne?

Look, we all drink ginger ale from time to time – one gets thirsty, has a stomach flu, but it is not a drink for pleasure.

    LIKE A BOSS!

  6. FloraJane says:

Whatever the contest, whoever goes home with the trophy, Mourinho always wins. Fact.

  7. bri_saldana says:

I'M GETTING SICK OF THIS 10 MEN BULL!! Each team has equal aggressors, divers, and actors but one NEVER EVER sees a man sent off from Barca. (Honestly, as a REAL fan I DON'T WANT ONE SENT OFF!) During La Liga or ANY OTHER MATCH, FINE!!!, give lopsided RED CARDS but for christ sake NOT CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL PLAY! UGH! so frustrated!

    • clarite says:

Well I don't want to start a fight or anything and I while I agree about the diving(this time mostly by barca players, yes) some of RM(Pepe, Marcelo, Ramos) play really dirty and I'm sorry but I can't say the same about Barca's players. So yes, they deserved the cards.

      • bri_saldana says:

Yeah, I definitely don't want to fight. However there is no way that I will agree that the card was warranted, yellow yes, straight red NO. Additionally the reason I listed the "agressors, divers, and actors" is because the characteristics are very much the face of BOTH teams. I will respectfully disagree with singling out Sergio & Pepe, their job is tough with against Barca/Messi and any questionable "malicious" play can easily be matched by the play of Barca players such as Mascherano and Alves, more importantly players in both teams commit "dirty play", right or wrong, in the heat of the match. (Personally I think Alves can fit in just fine with Wolves in the Prem) ….above all I REALLY REALLY wanted the game to be played with leveled numbers. I was really heartbroken that is wasn't. Messi was brilliant…no matter how wound up I'll get about RM there's no way ANYONE can take that away. Again UGH! just a frustrated, passionate, RM/footie fan :D

as a mature adult your supposed to learn to take responcibilities for your own actions not blame things on others. i dont really want to talk about the whole of the real madrid club as small children. but their decisions and harsh challenges on the field, which comes from an attemp to slow down a team with unheard of ability to hold on to the ball, are what often leave them with ten men. its pathetic to blame the refs. although on occasion refs really make poor misguided choices, how can anyone honestly say that this is a conspiracy. they are always reduced to ten men because they lose their heads and can't recover the ball thats what barcelona aim to do, control and frustrate! its not a coincidence that real madrid are down to ten men to barca and not other teams. it isnt because refs intentionally favor barca. its because barca use a style that forces fouls!! i hope you see my more than clear point everyone honestly………

  8. Jules says:

Except for how Pep didn’t. From the Telegraph: Guardiola had been quoted after the game as saying that a Barcelona equaliser from Pedro, ruled out for a fractional offside, had only happened because of a “linesman’s good eyesight” and that Barcelona had lost the Cup by a couple of centimetres. By saying it was the linesman’s good eyesight, he was saying the offside was the correct decision.

    • Por dior says:

You read it , you didn´t hear it , and i think my catalan and spanish aren´t that bad, sometimes is not what you say is how you say it, he also talked about the portuguese ref that was said on saturday to be designated for the Real Madrid-Barça . I´m sure he just said it for no reason.

      • Jules says:

I'm Catalan, I speak and read Catalan and Spanish. I heard it and read it. As this is an English language website, I quoted from an English language paper. And no, he didn’t want a Portuguese referee just as I’m sure Mourinho didn’t want a Catalan referee. There’s a reason why refs are picked from neutral countries.

  9. Marie says:

I cannot believe a guy as classy as Pep has been pushed to this extent. He did have a temper during his playing days so i guess it was just a matter of time before he went over the edge (something i totally approve of).

The point of this comment: I Love you Pep!

  10. Lex says:

Mourinho looks like he could use a good nights sleep.

  11. Mourinho looks like an evil genious in this picture. Pep just let his pride get to him…He'll be fine.

  12. mamaly says:

I just can't believe Mr. Guardiola walked right in to Jose's spin.
Mr Guardiola should have know better.
So far Sir Alex is the only one not inpressed with the mind games.

Jose must be a little worried, the bags under his (lovely) eyes got bags and circles.
    Hala Madrid

  13. @vrock112 says:

Guess we have the answer….yes 4 Clasicos is too much to bear! :) People are starting to crack under pressure. :)

This war of words cleary only served one purpose to create even MORE tension between club supporters (i.e. check out some comments above). I have to say BOTH of these men acted like boys today. I have a genius way to make up for this press conference debacle, have a shitless competition between the two clubs and then we will have a winner! :)

    • Iker<3 says:

No.. Jose.. is not mean.. he just tell the truth.. and he is arrogant..thats true.. but he is very succesfull!
Till he doesnt insult somone he can be so arrogant as he wants to be..
      Fútbal is for fun ;D
not to hate sombody or not!!
      Hala Madrid&Hala Barcelone ;D

  14. MadridistaJenn says:

I'm so lost as to how this is overshadowing such a promising game and the players who actually work hard on the pitch. People are making it seem like Pep set the press room on fire and ran around in a dirty diaper when he just said what he felt. Granted, I think the media was "shocked" at how blunt he was, but who cares. What I'm saying is, this isn't as important as the game.

Politics aside, can we just watch great football, please?

    • Lilly says:

      So true

    • Amy says:

Mou is deliberately overshadowing the players – that's his gig. What's amazing is that Pep took the bait. Since he's known Mou for so long, he should be aware that he does this day in and day out. I think it goes to show who is rattled here… Also – for anyone who thinks the pot is calling the kettle black, doesn't anyone understand Mou's sarcasm and irony?? The man is truly a brilliant instigator.

I hate seeing la roja boys like this! It breaks my heart when they fight and I just want them to be one big, happy family again!!!!!!!! It's been a rough two weeks :(

  15. Jen says:

Mou is an arrogant pr**k, I don't see how he gets away with all the crap he pulls, although most of it is highly entertaining!! I am 100% behind Pep and the Barca boys tonight!!

  16. JA7 says:

    Lett it out Pep, honey!!
    Can't wait for tonight's game!

  17. jean says:

I know this website is full of Barca Lovers. But actually Mou has a point and so does Pep.Maybe there was a misunderstanding somewhere. All I got to say is Go Mou and Go Real! Hala Madrid!

    • Marika says:

I am with you! Mou rules! I hope we will see a good game. Best of luck for both teams, but I sure hope that Real wins.

  18. Gladys says:

Let's hope for cut grass, no dirty tackles, no diving, and no injuries – some of this not going to happen, sadly,…but, man, wouldn't that be a great game for both sides?! And let's then do the talking on the pitch with our feet (and hands for Victor and Iker) and maybe, if we're lucky, some torn clothing and removed shirts for us loyal fans.

  19. Tina says:

Hahahaha! Pep is better than Mou in this game too! Poor Mou… Not.

  20. sabrihanna says:

Pep you don't have to curse!!!

  21. Caitlin says:

    Totally agree! *sighs*

  22. Lotte says:

Yep, that's why Mou is the biggest loser.

  23. hereforthenando says:

Pep just threw down. Based on what we know about Mourinho, I don't see how he did anything over the past few years to NOT deserve it. You go, Pep!

  24. alizanz says:

    Mou got to him..

  25. WOW says:

Both of them should stop with the bitching, leave the bitching to the women boys. I suggest the pair take off all their clothing and go at it settle it out while i watch with a glass of martini!

    • Gladys says:

LOL, you slay me!!! In that picture Pep is clearly holding the oil they're going to spread on each other, while Mou looks on impatiently, waiting for you to mix your drink.

    • hbandshbreak says:

I'll be right there with you enjoying it all. ;-)

  26. blitzenTO says:

For those who didn't bother to listen to the full presser, here is a summary (in my words):

“Look. I know, Jose knows, and you (the press) know that he is a master of manipulation. These are the tactics he uses, they clearly work with you, but I myself do not work that way. This time he has accused me of something directly so I will respond although I prefer not to. I won’t defend myself to you—you can look at my history and decide for yourselves like adults what is the truth. If you choose to be spoonfed propaganda from Mourinho and Perez, then I can’t argue with that, but let’s not pretend that isn’t what is happening.”

Pep was inviting the press to come up to his level rather than dragging him down to theirs. After this, his team will be desperate to win for him. Legend. Visca Barca!

  27. Lilly says:

Mou has spent the entire season moaning about refereeing, so being annoyed by Pep doing it is the height of irony.
Anyway, here's hoping for an exciting match tonight!

    • @DebStimson says:

I guess what Mou is saying is that this is normal behavior for him to complain about the refs when he feels they have made important mistakes but it was uncharacteristic for Pep to do it.

"Until now, we had two groups of coaches, a small one, a very small one, that doesn’t speak about referees, and a larger one, which I belong to, that criticizes referees when they make important mistakes. It’s made up of a group of people like me who can’t control their frustrations, but who are also happy to praise the work of a referee if he did well."

  28. This way to be arrogant, it's a way of his personality, but there isn't only this narcissist part in him!!
There's also the sweet part, that he hides carefully.

  29. Sergz says:

    Pep, dude. Chill out.

  30. Jules says:

For everyone commenting about Pep "being a hater", did you read the whole quote? Mourinho took Pep’s words out of context (what he actually said was “We would have won but for the linesman’s good eyesight,” implying that the decision to rule Pedro’s goal offside was the correct one) and Pep was insulted. He’s known Mourinho for years and he took it personally that he believed Marca (who butchered Pep’s quote to suit their own purposes, quelle surprise) when Mourinho should know him better. Either way, Jose Mourinho commenting on anyone insulting refs is rich.

    • SlyMysteron says:

Pep should take it personally. Mourinho said Pep is the only manager in the world that questions the ref's correct decision. Who behaves in that manner and says something like that? I'm so glad the Pep called him out, Mou went too far.

Although, Pep being offended and cursing is sorta' like seeing my Nana swear for the first time.

      • Lotte says:

I agree with you so much!

        • Sunshine! says:

The press is messing with both Barca and Madrid to start a quarrel again…or 'heat' things up

Both coaches should have known better and ignored it, Pep said one thing Marca blew it up and Mou took it wrong way…

          • Jules says:

Marca, AS, Sport and El Mundo Deportivo do this every time a Clasico rolls around, why do you think it’s become so provocative this year? It’s Mou. He deliberately antagonises other teams before matches (see what he said about Manuel Pelligrini before the Malaga match) unless the other team is lead by someone like Sir Alex Ferguson who won’t take his nonsense. He thought Pep would just take it and this time, Pep had enough.

            • miwa says:

Um, except Pep did exactly what Mou planned: he fell for his trap. His outburst was unconventional for him, it only made him and Barcelona look unstable. It would have been better if he just shut him up like he always does. And, honestly, he exaggerated a little bit what with the Perez remarks (considering his dear president so nicely predicted that the Copa final would end 5-0 for Barca).

  31. Summer says:

Hey is there someone that is a little jealous…Pep shouldn't be so jealous and strict. We are speaking about José Mourinho, this way to be arrogant, it's a way of his personality, but there isn't only this narcissist part in him, there's also the sweet part, that he hides carefully.

    • Kristina says:

What is there to be jelaous about? The championship in the press room? Read the effing interview and then talk ok!?

    • @DebStimson says:

hmmmm must be Barca fans that are giving you the thumbs down. thumbs up from me.

Mou apparently really got under Pep's skin but Pep went even lower when he had to insult Sergio in his rant.

Personally, I've been a bit disappointed in several things being said by the Barca camp, even about their fellow SNT teammates. For being the alleged "classy" side, I'm quite shocked.

  32. lyricm9 says:

these two men are HOT. tsk tsk..

  33. Shiv says:

    oooooooh go Pep !

  34. jessie says:

Ok Pep, just concentrate on the action on the pitch. Results will speak for themselves.
