QOTD: WAGs on Alexander McQueen

“My heart goes out to Alexander’s family and friends at this unbelievably sad and tragic time. Fashion has lost one of its most talented and inspirational figures.” Cheryl Cole.

“McQueen was a master of fashion, creative genius and an inspiration. Today the fashion industry has lost a true great. An icon of all time. He made all he touched beautiful and will be desperately missed. My heart is very much with his family and friends at this very sad time.” Victoria Beckham

If you know fashion, then you know what kind of irreplaceable hole will be left by Alexander McQueen’s death. RIP, Lee. Whether you “got it” or not, he was an artist unparalleled.

More thoughts from the fashionistas at Kickette HQ after the jump.

“To say that the fashion world has lost one of its greatest is an understatement. When Lee Alexander McQueen died last week, the entire world lost an incredible artist. He was a master of the avant garde, but also turned out incredible ready-to-wear pieces loved by women everywhere, including Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, and Alex Gerrard.

McQueen’s runway presentations were full-on spectacles. In the past he had models walk through wind tunnels, get drenched with gallons of water, and who can forget the incredible “armadillo” shoes that were the talk of his Spring/Summer 2010 line? [Ed note: or the 2008 A/W show that had editors crying during the presentation it was so stunning...]

McQueen thought completely out of the box and while a good majority of his runway looks were not wearable creations, his artistry was inspiring to all of us in fashion. His genius will likely not be matched in this generation and it is heartbreaking to wonder why the most gifted are sometimes the most troubled.”

“The death of Lee McQueen isn’t just a blow to the fashion world, but a blow to everyone who supports artistry, original thought and pure creative talent. He didn’t just create clothes, he created a whole world in which his creations lived. His attention to detail was minute, and everything from his designs, to the styling of the models and the catwalk environment was perfect.

It is no wonder that women everywhere loved to wear his designs, as he truly understood that women want to feel special when they pull on their clothes. His designs were so much more than clothes; instead, they were pieces that helped shape how a woman feels about herself, and people bought Alexander McQueen because they knew that so much effort was put into the creation of his clothing.

He didn’t shy away from his roots, with a sense of Britishness pervading his designs with his use of the Union Jack, Harris Tweed and Scottish Tartan. McQueen was one of the most important and creative figures in fashion, and the world will truly be less without him and his designs. RIP Lee McQueen, a true legend, genius and artist. You will be missed.”

    Wonderful and meaningful tribute Kickette.

Maybe it's because truly creative people have no "skin". They are hyper-aware of everything in their environments…so when painful life events touch them…it hurts so much more. They don't have the protective armour most of us have learned to develop. For them, a hurt is a deep cut to the heart whereas it would probably be a scuff mark on our chest for the rest of us.

I wish I could have told him that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

I’ve never been able to afford high fashion, but I’ve always felt if I could that McQueen’s designs would be in my top 3… if not my favorite. I’ve always been riveted by his clothing. It’s an absolute tragedy to fashion of course, but beyond that it’s always so sad when someone is so sad they take their own life. It’s adds an entire new dimension of sadness to the situation. :(

    Beautifully written ladies. <3

McQueen was pure artistic genius. Im still in awe of Shalom Harlow's dress, spray painted on the runway by robotic arms, in his Spring/Summer 1999 collection!

And he was quite the character, too.

I remember the first time I ever saw him interviewed on FT, backstage at his first show, and he kept his face turned, back to the camera, the whole time and explained that he couldnt show his face because he was still on the dole. :)

    He will be sadly missed.

    May he rest in peace.

I could never afford him but I sure did covet!

Such a sad loss…I was never a superfan of his designs but I loved that he was never afraid to push the envelope let his creative brillance loose.

    RIP

Thank you so much for writing this! McQueen has always been one of my fave designers. I´m still shocked that he decided to leave this world but I hope he has found his freedom now.

He was brilliant. He was not only a designer, he was an artist.

Fashion will never be the same again. That´s what I truly belive. There is something missing and everybody who is involved in fashion can feel it.

I salut you Mr McQueen! And I salut you, Kickette for writing this!

    Thank you so much!

  9. Erin says:
