Question of the Day: The Polo Shirt

imageRight.

Who the hell made the call on this fine work of fashion craftsmanship being part of the English National Team kit?

A one-eyed peppermint candy maker on a day course in golf shirt pattern-making?

Frank is not amused, and neither are we.

This quote sums up the experience quite nicely:

I’m very concerned by the way it makes England’s lithe athletes look like lardy layabouts.

Btw, the above was commentary on the white kit, as seen during the game against Slovakia, not this 1970s biscuit-coloured, collared blaze of knitted glory.

  1. The shirt isn't all bad, but definitely could've been better. I mean, is a peppermint candy design the best they could come up with?

  2. carly says:

To be honest, I haven't seen it. lol Hold on… Oh dear, I hate it. And the shorts are absolutely massive. All they're missing is the white pullover and they'll be playing cricket.

  3. Dreamgirl says:

I'm not a fan either. The only good thing for me was the inspired performance the lads gave in these shirts. If that continues I will place a bulk order.

  4. The Fourth Official says:

I don't mind the white kit. It's okay. What I cannot tolerate is the red and khaki training kit (including clam diggers). See the England thread for photographic evidence.

  5. Moonie says:

I really liked the new kit. The all white look was very sexy and the slightly more fitted shape of the short's legs did wonderful things for their thighs (well it did Gareth Barry's anyway!)

  6. Yasichelsea says:

I'm agree with Frank! Those kits are so shit!

  7. Rexy says:

If he thinks the white polo shirts look bad on him, wait until all the pasty fat old men wear them to the matches

I love their new kit. They look classy

  10. Mrs.De Rossi says:

I'm sorry but when I first saw the pictures of the game, I thought I hope this is one of those one time retro kits cause it is extremely ugly…. only a few people look good in it but the majority look like they are playing for some crap pub team

    • rosshoodies says:

The shirt looks too full and messy with so many stripes all lining it. The logo itself doesn't speak much for itself, nothing interesting abt it. The only thing okay about the shirt is it's simple collar. Sometimes a shirt doesn't need to much design; simplicity is bliss.

  11. Rebecca says:

The kit is awful, bring back the old ones.

  12. torres4ever says:

I honestly am not a big fan of the new kit. The polo shirt makes them look slightly childish.

  13. nicki says:

Not a fan of the kit, but Frankie still looks Frank-tastic in it.

  14. Genevieve Gourcuff says:

It's pretty hilarious. But hey, it's still better than our hideous Australian tracksuit.

  15. aristeia says:

I really loved their red kits. But I may have an issues, I love the color red, haha. Regardless, they've got to be able to come up w/ something better than this. :(

  16. jax says:

Can't say I really like the new kit. Don't like the all white, makes them look like Real Madrid. The white polo shirt looks like every schoolkid's sports kit here in the UK – you can buy them in packs of 3 at any supermarket here! Not classy at all. Bring back the dark shorts at least.

  17. Blair says:

Hate new kit, hate those polos. Frank is right. They better change all that by the World Cup or their fans will not be best pleased. (Oh and can you belive that this is one of the most expensive England kits ever produced. What a load of shite!)

  18. Pavi (Mrs Metzelder) says:

I'm a fan of the new kit – especially when I saw Stevie and Gareth Barry in it!

  19. TammyV says:

The main issue with the kits… the base layer is built in.. Umm No Umbro, just no. I do find some super-de-duper humor in Lamps of all people talking about ugly clothes.. Baby, is it because it isn't shiney? That boy loves him some sparkly/shiney clothes

We've been debating the merits (or lack thereof) of the new kit in the England thread for the past couple of days.I don't like it. It looks unfinished to me. The fact that the kit is a polo shirt — well, it makes the actual polo shirts they wear for press conferences and such (as per Frank's lovely photo above), look like just another horrible version of the *actual* kit. There's no real difference and that's just not a good thing! The only plus with the new kit: is the tailoring. The nipped in waist. Nice, but not enough for me to love. The training jackets are terrible too. Bland grey with an odd strappy thing around the neck…. so 1980s — it wasn't good then, and certainly isn't good now! lose that girl blog

  21. HiL says:

I don’t like the new kit AT ALL. I agree with Erin, it really looks like something a golf player would wear.

  22. Dee13 (mrs m metze) says:

i’m one of the few who digs the new kit.. nice retro, old school look.. i think people are used to seeing sh*t (like logos) plastered all over kits, so seeing plain white was probably startling.. i like the tailoring too… bet y’all will like it if they play in the rain… ;D
the leisure wear is fug, however… :s

  23. Becca says:

    What was that ?
i didnt quite pay attension to the writing, i was too interested in my frankie .. Im soo in love with this man!

  24. Callie says:

The collared shirt worn against Slovakia looked like cricket whites. Could it be that they’re trying to inspire the team to something akin to winning back The Ashes?

  25. Emily (Giggsy's Gal) says:

Huh. Not the reaction I’d anticipated, to be honest. I haven’t seen the warm-up suits, so I cannot judge those. The striped shirt that Frank is wearing in that photo is horrid, though. I am one of the few who actually quite like the new all-white kit. I don’t mind the polo shirt style, but I can appreciate the white shirt and shorts combo. Ladies, if for no other reason, you can imagine what it’ll be like to see our England men in all white uniforms soaked to the bone. Yes, translucent kits. Always a good thing! One thing I very much appreciate is the fact that the kit is red and white only. The only bit of blue is the Three Lions badge. I’m glad that the kit designers woke up and realised that the English team is not in fact the British team, and therefore England should be sporting the colours of St. George: red and white, not blue. If they made some minor adjustments, I wouldn’t mind seeing a red shirt and white shorts, but if they leave the kit as is, I have no major qualms. Those striped ones, though, have got to go. Yuck!

Giving my one lone vote to liking the new kits. I’m much more concerned with the fact I’m developing a little crush on JT!!!!!!!!!!!

I am glad that we are discussing this…I agree with Lampard, I hate this polo shirt idea as the new kit…its football not golf or cricket…bring back the jerseys cause this new kit looks awful!!!

  31. FootballerChick43 - "Mrs.Ballack" says:

I hate the polo shirt, I hate the new kit. God awful terrible.

  32. Erin says:

HATE this striped polo shirt. As I said yesterday in the England thread, it looks like something one would buy for a toddler from Baby Gap. Ick.

As for the white kit, I hate that one too. They look more suited to tennis or golf. Just poncey. I don’t mind all white, but it should at least look like athletic wear.
