Reasons to be Cheerful Vol.1: Europa League

Resilience is our byword here at Kickette. It has to be. We maintain a solid stance in the face of the good , the bad and the truly disturbing. It’s been tough at times. But we do it. For you.

So instead of bemoaning the fact that a huge swathe of our favourite boys have  crashed out of the Champions League and essentially the season is over blah blah yappity yap, we have decided to concentrate on the positive – the Europa League.

Admittedly it’s a far less shiny competition, (and not done any favours by the fact that it feels like the qualifying rounds go on forever, *snore*), but we would like to take this opportunity to illustrate a couple of the reasons why you should be watching come semi-final time.

We commence our examination with our lead picture, which features Dickson Etuhu and Paul Konchesky of Fulham. Having spectacularly knocked out Juventus in the previous round, they surprised many by playing a controlled game over two legs to see off Germany’s Wolfsburg. On 22nd April they will travel to Germany for the first leg of the semi’s against Hamburg; a team who also have plenty to offer…

The other leg will feature the dear lads of Liverpool FC who will be playing Atletico Madrid, also on 22nd April. Usually we are happy to take any opportunity to feature photos of Fernando Torres, but for today at least we have decided to restrain ourselves. Instead, feast your eyes on his former club’s eye candy, namely Alvaro Dominguez and Simao.

How you doin’, Europa?! Roll on Semis.

This is great! I can’t wait to see Fernando Torres Playing against his former team… It will surely be a great battle…. go LIVERPOOL…

  2. Venice says:

Oh Kickette, this post is making me dizzy in all the right ways! :-D

I always liked UEFA/Europa league, regardless of the Liverpool situation. The quality of football is generally quite good, especially in the knockout stages, and the matchups are interesting as there is a far bigger pool of teams than in the CL so you rarely get to see teams playing each other twice in a couple of years. That makes it more unpredictable; besides, I love spotting new hotties :-)

  3. Janet says:

Ross County could play in this competition next season. That alone demonstrates its meaninglessness.

    • tammyv says:

If they earned the right to play in it, then they earned the right to play in it. It does not devalue the competition it makes it more special

    • MrsNesta says:

Aww I'm really happy for Ross County and still have ambitions for Stenhousemuir to make it :)

    Ooh Petric…think I want a bite.

Europa League has been exciting this season and the previous seasons too, even if it gets less visibility not having the biggest clubs there. However this 2nd division of european clubs deserves to shine too.
Shame no portuguese clubs are present at the semis, I’ll be cheering for the club with more portuguese connections which is, of course, Atlético.

  5. NandosGirl says:

Liverpool vs. Atletico should be fun, with Nando’s return and all that jazz. As a Liverpool supporter, I’ll take any competition in which we’re not sucking. Oh, how far we’ve fallen :( . Btw, Kickette, gratuitous Nando pics are greatly appreciated. So, yeah, no restraint required ;P

  6. Kleon says:

At. Madrid vs. Liverpool would be very interesting especially for Nando’s return to his former club. (They play against each other on Champions league before but nando couldn’t play in Madrid)
I prefer Valencia over At. Madrid but… this is what we have ¬¬
Any way I’ll be chearing for Liverpool =)

  7. Gina says:

Ugh. Atletico Madrid are possibly the most undeserving team to make it to EL semi finals ever, and for that reason alone, I am boycotting the rest of the competition. I don’t care who wins as long as it’s not them. They have won ONE game in Europe this season, yet they are in the semi finals. Hardly seems fair considering the calibre and heroics of the other teams left in it, and also some of those that were knocked out. No amount of ‘man candy’ (which, btw in my opinion, they are severely lacking. Aside from Asenjo, none of them appeal to me) is going to make me willingly sit and watch them. Even if they ARE playing Liverpool.

And for the record, yes I am bitter because it was one of my teams they knocked out in the last leg, but seriously, with one win in 12 games, do they even deserve to be there? I could go into other reasons I don’t think they do, but I’ll just make myself sound bad, so I’ll just leave it at that.

    • senora ramos says:

gina, love, i agree with you. (well, except for the eye candy. reyes and emery as well as kun) but that may be because i have this aversion to them. but i'll watch fulham, as i said for dempsey.

  8. Inés says:

I don't like Europa League, coz all the teams I supported lost! :(

this is the first time I'll support Liverpool, coz I want to make fun of my sister if the win! *laughs like witch*

  9. AKA says:

Can I put in a word for Ruud van Nistelrooy? Call me crazy, but he a) has been scoring goals and b) is looking really quite good these days at Hamburg. Think 'sexy caveman' and he really works. *G*

  10. tammyv says:

Clinto Dempsety better be ok for semis, final and the world cup or Roy Hodgson is in serious trouble

    • senora ramos says:

are you trying to panic me?! i've not heard anything about the injury being bad enough as all that. the us cannot afford anymore injury issues!!!!

and as long as roy has messi, he'll be ok. lol!

      • tammyv says:

It is at least a two game injury and that scares the hell out of me since we are less than a month away from training camp

  11. Gina says:

lol, I have serious issues with Kun too. Those issues prevent me seeing anything remotely attractive in him. Also, Emery as in Valencia's manager? Or did you mean Quique. Because I'm down with both of those, Valencia bring the hot factor :P

    • Gina says:

Um this was totally meant to be a reply to the previous reply. idek, I am half asleep and clearly too worked up over this lol.

    • senora ramos says:

lol! i so meant quique! but yes, both are nummy. the whole maradonna thing with kun is a real turnoff, but he is easy on the eyes!!

  12. imhereforthenando says:

I'm excited about the Europa League. It's the only thing that Liverpool is doing well in this year. And sadly, I'm starting to accept that we will probably be back next year :(

But come one, Liverpool v. Atletico, Fernando's former club, is always an exciting match-up.

But Kickette, there is no need to exercise restraint re: posting Fernando photos. I recommend always indulging this desire.

  13. senora ramos says:

sniffs, this is not any better for me. no valencia. only atleti.

at least dempsey still in with fulham!!
