Style Files: City Boys & Their Cargos

Right. So what’s the deal with the trousers, City boys? Some months ago Micah Richards was spotted sporting a rather fetching pair of kecks (below), and yesterday Mario Balotelli was noted wearing a rather similar trouser outside his hotel (above).

While we’re fully in favour of a pant style that offers space for thunder thighs to roam free, snugness around the calf and a roomy nest for the occupant of a short tent, we’re mystified as to whether this (above) is merely a fashion statement or something ultimately more functional. Parachute pants, perhaps? Crotch handbag?

Do tell…

This man could not look more high maintenance.

  2. Catie says:

Not a fan of the pants. But I really loathe that shirt. I feel like there are a lot of feminine necklines ending up on mens clothing lately, and it's all the bad necklines at that.

  3. He needs the pockets for his wage packet.

  4. Amandinha says:

I don't see the problem with Mario's look. He looks like he smells fantastic! hahha

  5. Alone Albuquerque says:

Odiei , prinpalmente a blusa horrorosa!Isso porque é italiano ,e todo mundo fala que eles se vestem bem !!

  6. Zhenya says:

Ha, ha, I think the shirt is worse than the pants! That collar and those sleeve cuffs! :S

I have to say, I am SO starved to see men that wear ANYTHING resembling a flare, a pinache, an interest in looking good – even when a scarf is donned in summer or denim is worn on denim, I LOVE that these guys opened up their closets (ehem) and really CHOSE what they were gonna wear, what they were in the mood to say about themselves. They look crisp, comfortable, and like they probably smell good. Are my standards too low because I live in middle-america – damn right! Am I semi-delusional from living alone too long? *slump* *swig* Still, happy with these two. I guess all I really shoulda said a paragraph ago is that I think cargo pants are just fine…

you said it so right. i love it when guys think outside the box and actualy wear something "different" (i hate to see every guy on the street wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt) it says alot about there personality. like with sergio ramos who always seems to dress way differently with his green jeans (btw love those green jeans) and golden shorts. but it just makes people love em way more.

    • Johanna says:

I also dig the cargo pants but the shirt I’m not so fond of. Anyway, everyone is entitled to wear what the please and if the guys are happy, than it’s okay with me.

  8. senora ramos says:

mario is so good looking. now if he could just lose the 'tude, we'd be great. that's all i got ladies. cargos remind me of old navy

  9. ba says:

he doesn’t have actually any class with this non-sense style!! I don’t like City’s players…they’re walking like as richiest guys or pretty arrogants

  10. Jules says:

The pants are bad but that shirt! It looks like a woman’s blouse. Those trainers are horrendous as well although that might be a reflection of the harem trousers…

  11. C16 says:

Oh dear!!!!! This is all SO SO SO wrong….
The pant itself is not that bad but the whole outfit is just… a disgrace.

  12. Leya says:

Okay so I disagree with a lot of ppl's statements:

I think the shoes and the shirt are both fab. The pants sort of miss the mark a little bit, but I think its more of a mismatching of individual pieces more than anything.

I know ppl think his shirt looks like a woman's blouse, but I think its beautiful, and might have looked better with a pair of suit trousers in (bear with me) gunmetal-gray flannel (which, mind you, should not have the fact that they are flannel held against them bc they're gorgeous if cut perfectly).

IMHO, menswear suffers from this perpetual BOX placed around it in that its virtually impossible to make as much a variety of interesting and innovative clothing for men as for women and have it be acceptable. I personally can't stand to see a parade of conventional suits, shirts, tees, jeans, and trousers every single season. A lot of designers are thinking outside the box with menswear and have it on their runways, but not so many ppl are wearing these things, particularly in the US (save select cities).

So, in short, don't discriminate against menswear! Imagine these pieces separately, and styled differently and you might like them.

These harem style pants seem to be all the rage in Europe (not so much in the States *yet*) not sure if I’m a fan however, I have to say he is looking rather sexy ;)

    • Jules says:

I work near the Fashion Institute in NY and I can tell you from eye witness accounts that yes, they are in fact in the U.S. and spreading like a dangerous wildfire.

      • Leya says:

I actually take classes at FIT and it's true these harem/parachute pants are pretty much everywhere there.

        • CrazyforNando says:

Hence the *yet* LOL! I knew they would be infiltrating soon!! I was in Italy last October and I swear almost everyone was wearing them. They're ok but I think they look better on certain body types.

  14. aps says:

I think he looks very sexy here. He's growing on me.

  15. Miss Estonia says:

The harem pant look doesn’t work for women and it definitely doesn’t work for men. It looks like he’s wearing a nappy.

    • Steph says:

This. They look really horrible. And yeah, if they looked horrible on women, they're definitely not going to work for men. :/

  16. Little Miss Arsenal says:

    I’s a Man City thing…I hope…love his sneakers though

  17. Nessa says:

Yeah…I love his “classe” exept his pants…

  18. cliu says:

These pants are cross between military and harem styles: sort of Milli Vanilli meets G. I. Joe or English equivalent and I’m not liking it.

  19. HiL says:

    yuk.

Can't believe i just chose him for my fantasy PL team while he's dressing like that.

  20. Lisa says:

My guess is that both boys need breathing room for their third leg.

  21. caitanya says:

I don't know, but Mario Balotelli is looking pretty freaking sharp! He wears the trousers well! Not digging Micah Richards' look though.
