UPDATE – Per a club official who spoke to news agency Efe on the condition of anonymity, 8 people from Etoile Filante, including players and/or staff, have died while an ‘unknown number’ were wounded.
According to The Associated Press, Togo’s government confirmed that a fiery bus crash near the city of Atakpame had killed ‘at least six’ players from Etoile Filante and critically injured another 28 people. The Togolese Championnat National league club was traveling to their away match against Semassi, scheduled for Sunday, before their bus suddenly flipped over, fell down a ravine and caught fire. A burst/flat tyre is believed to have set off the horrific chain of events.
“We do not know how we managed to get out of the accident,” said one of the survivors, goalkeeper Mama Souleyman.
Regrettably, this sad news comes less than two years after a terrorist attacked the Togo national football team’s bus in Angola, killing that squad’s Assistant Coach and Director of Communications.
Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.
