Victoria Beckham: To Spats Or Not To Spats?

Can Victoria Beckham makes spats happen? Or will they go the way of ‘fetch‘?

Victoria is in New York, where she spoke at the Women’s Wear Daily Apparel & Retail CEO Summit last night. She’s the first woman to wear a look from her Spring 2012 collection and in doing so wore the item that most perplexed us: spats.

When we reviewed Victoria’s collection in September we weren’t even sure what these were. ‘Are they trousers? Tights?’, we wondered aloud. As it turns out they are indeed spats and we still don’t know what to make of them. For those of you unfamiliar with spats, we direct you to Wikipedia.  Spats have previously been seen on marching bands and 19th Century French soldiers.

We think this look as a whole is what’s bugging us. There’s something about a strapless dress with covered legs that really bugs us. With a long silhouette like this, it’s not necessary for modesty’s sake. Would we like the spats more if they were with a shorter hem so as to mimic knee-high boots?

Maybe?

We think we need to see this on a non-model human being to figure it out. While we are okay with the shorter version that mimics the look of slouchy ankle boots, there’s just something about the tall version we can’t get behind.

How do you feel about VB’s spats? Do you think they’re a fun alternative to boots and a good way to change up a pair of heels? Or do you think they should have died with Napoleon?

I think Victoria Beckham is rocking that outfit like no one else. Literally. Because everyone else would look batty. Spats are pointless. It's essentially a leather tube sock with the toes cut off. How can that be comfortable? So no, they won't become a thing. But, VB will always have the ability to make them look good, even if it's just for a second.

I don’t like spats and i would never buy a pair of hers (even though they’re Loubis). But, you know, Victoria makes the rules here and by watching this picture of her wearing them, they look so fashion forward.

i've gone to great lengths to cover the fact that i haven't shaved my legs but homegirl takes it to a new level.

Am slightly traumatized by how V. Becks gets aways with this kind of fashion, when regular women would be laughed out of society!

I feel like spats are the leather cousin of leg warmers and they may work better with round toe pumps…

Victoria Beckham looks fantastic in those spats, what ever she wears, she wears with so much grace.

  8. Marina_Isabella says:

The dress is ok, but those shoes and whatever is it that she's covering her legs with… oh jesus. I wonder why is she covering her legs with spats?…

  9. RubyDubbin says:

If the spats were a little longer in the front…they might hide that monster bunion on her left foot.

  10. kaya says:

Imo, y'all give her too much credit. She eats nothing but sushi and her life is all about being thin and fashionable. Anybody with that sort of bankroll and vanity to spare can achieve such feats.

    • Hadiya says:

Agreed. Not with the credit part, but I think (maybe because I'm thick C:) she is unhealthily skinny. She looks good in the dress, but I saw her on some talk show and thought she was going to collapse.

  11. earidurt says:

they look extra chic on her…naturally…. but i am sure on most other women it would look really ridiculous….

    • _Titi_ says:

ia if there is one person who can pull that of its Victoria. On most people it will look strange but she can get away with it because she's Posh Spice and shes fabulous.

  12. Coco says:

She looks like a smacked ass! The dress is too long and navy blue and black do not mix well. Sorry England I know she's royalty to you but god and the queen can't save this outfit.

  13. kix says:

lovin' victoria's post-baby bod. still skinny, but her upper bod is much fuller.

  14. Gigi says:

I think you have to be that skinny and pose with those angles to make spats work for you. It's incredible how she's already back to pre-baby weight.

  15. xoWinnie says:

    i don't think this will catch on…ever.
however, she does manage to make them look fierce
just like everything else she's ever worn…

  16. ChefDi says:

Blech :-P I think they're awful on anybody but her … should have definitely gone out with Napoleon. She looks so damn good!!

  17. Gladys says:

She somehow makes them look amazing. For the rest of us, I say no. (Even her runway models don't look a tenth as good as her in them.)

  18. Sara P says:

I think she looks fabulous…she actually smiles these days! Love it!

Also…I love the look. I think she can pull off just about anything! :) 4 kiddos later and still kicking bootie in the fashion world!

  19. TFBlovesArsenal says:

Didn't a bunch of designers try to make this happen a couple years back? I remember seeing the spats on some shoes and thinking that they were interesting, but I never saw the trend take off. It's probably one of those things that looks good on the runway, but just doesn't work well in real life.
