Weekend Results: Good For You?

Leeds ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel illustrates why would should all be carefully watching the English Championship this season. Images: Getty Images via Daylife

So while we’re sure you’ve found our stories about haircuts, pre-season training and Twitter feeds both innovative and fascinating, we know you’ll be relieved to hear there’s finally some footie to report on. It’s been a while. Let’s hope we haven’t lost our groove.

First up, Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid narrowly avoided embarrassing defeat in the final game of their US tour, conceding two first half goals to LA Galaxy before dragging themselves back into it via two from our favourite booty-shelf boy Gonzalo Higuian and a strike from Pedro Leon.

Naturally, Madrid old boy and current Galaxy player David Beckham was in attendance. Although he seemed to enjoy himself, we were disconcerted. Just a quickie, but Dave? Love? What’s going on with your hair? It’s… weird.

Back in England, and the league season kicked off, Championship highlights including Norwich’s 2-3 defeat to Watford at Carrow Road and Derby beating newly promoted Leeds United 1-2. Respect goes to Derby’s Robbie Savage who played in the game for Derby, then got changed, ran to the media centre at Elland Road and co-hosted the BBC’s 606 football phone in. And by “co-hosting”, we mean asking all the callers whether the yellow card he received during the game was justified.

Any excitement Bristol City fans may have had about their season prospects since signing England goalkeeper David James were promptly extinguished when City shipped three goals at home. Oops.

Finally, congrats to Manchester United, who beat Chelsea 3-1 in the FA Community Shield, with Dimi Berbatov and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez both scoring. This would not necessarily be noteworthy in itself, except that it allows us to continue believing that featuring on Kickette’s hallowed pages promotes success on the pitch.

Did you doubt it? Thought not. How was the weekend for you?

  4. MeL says:

  5. Jo says:

I just adore that photo of Chicharito. Glad to see that he suffered no ill-effects from having the ball cannon from shin to face to net. :D

  6. JV says:

I love the way they are looking to Van Der Sar like “we did ok, right Dad?”.

    • I'd Rather Walk says:

bahahahaha……I was thinking the same thing.

    • Leya says:

      hahaha I love it!

I was so mad though bc I could NOT for the LIFE of me find an airing of these games on my television! Someone in the States tell me what channel you watch all of your games on and I'll see if I have it!

Mi amor is doing a-MAHHH-zing at Man. U.!

      Chicharito, siempre te amare. Felicidades!

      • LuvinBale says:

Depends on who your carrier is. If it's FIOS or Comcast you can get Fox soccer channel and Fox Soccer Plus. Altough ESPN2 has been playing random EPL games the Fox soccer channel and fox soccer plus will play all the games. FA Cup- Carling Cup-La Liga and Series A. And so much more. Sorry I sound like an ad but when I finally got the channels I became a very very happy girl. I watch no other channels during the season unless it's The Real Houswives.

I say all this and I have to admit I am frustrated at the moment because I not able to find the Man City vs Tottenham game on either channel.

    • MeL says:

JA JA JA you read my mind!!

  7. Zinny says:

Ah yes, my favorite part of the weekend was watching the dual delicousness of Xabi Alonso and Gonzalo Higuain. Those two were on fi-yah! Oh and Iker played too, in the second half! Anyone else notice the facial hair is creeping back? He still looks heavenly. And El Ramos was looking muy caliente as well. And poor C-Ron, who didn’t score any goals was looking fit, too. Overall it was a good weekend.

  8. loved the united match

    especially chicharitos goal ;L

  9. Rusty says:

There were games this weekend? I went and saw my favorite band twice.

  10. The best weekend result in the Championship was the Tractor Boys defeating Middlesbrough (favourites for automatic promotion) at the Riverside 3-1!! Gah!!! It was amazing! Congratulations to Roy Keane and Town for a fantastic start to the season. (Makes up for Roy choosing to sit in the directors’ box on Tuesday night for the Ipswich Town v Spurs friendly, after I had travelled all the way to Ipswich just to see him.:( )

And I was at Wembley for the Community Shield, in a fantastic seat, and I had an absolute blast. United looked really good and I’m filled with optimism for the new season. Oh, and thanks to all the gang at The Torch for letting me hang with you before the match AND teaching me some new songs.

Can’t wait to come back to England very soon to see United and Town in action again.

Oh, and one more thing: happy birthday to Red Legend Roy Keane who turns 39 tomorrow (August 10)! You still got it!

Phew, okay, I’m done now. :)

  11. I'd Rather Walk says:

Greatest result was the Man United win!!!! Baby Javi is so good that he adjusted himself to score off his face after slipping!!(he obviously didn't mean to bang the ball off his nosey wosey and score but it was damn well hilarious and fantastic and so was his reaction when they showed it on the big screen!!)Roll on Monday…..I'm tired of these meaningless games in terms of points……wanna see us start to rack up the points on the table!!

  12. tammyv says:

Galaxy were never going to win… Madrid played their 19th string keeper in the first half with only Serigo and Rafa as first string. Second half was C-Ron, Iker, Xabi.

And that third goal was breathtaking and was by Xabi. God it was seriously beautiful. Seriously, it was breathtaking in person.

    • DebS says:

And Sergio got to wear the Captain band!

Once they went down 2-0, I just KNEW Cris would be in for the 2nd half. Higuaín, Xabi and Iker were the icing on the cake. The intensity definitely improved for Madrid. The Galaxy played well but their definitely not the same calibar as Real Madrid.

On a side note… Is of Jose' really pronounced "Jose'" in Portugese or is it "Hose" like in Spanish?

      • tammyv says:

I have always heard “J”ose, with the “j” sound…even when he is interviewed.

The Galaxy said that everyone from both teams would play in the match (barring injury) and pretty much everyone did. It was so much fun though Barca last year had a much better crowd

        • DebS says:

          ok…thanks for the clarification.

I was glad that it looked like everyone got to play too. Except Sergio could have played the whole game and wouldn’t have minded :D Still 80k in attendance is WAY more than what we get for most MLS matches. It was good to see so many in the stands. I feel so badly for our guys when they can barely get 20k in the stands. :(

The fans sure liked it when Ronaldo came in. Not that I blame them. He didn’t disappoint, even if he didn’t score. And Xabi’s goal was brilliant :D

  13. MeL says:

YEIH!!! Congrats ManUtd!! !! That is Such a cute picture!! Luv It!! Thanks Kickette!! ;)

  14. Julia D says:

After watching the Charity Shield, I have decided to come down on the "yes he's hot" side of the fence.

The weird contrast between his bambi-eyed baby face and his man's body is……very very sexy indeed. Kind of doesn't work so it does…and grows on me. Hope this makes sense. *whew cold drink*

  15. gillyrosh says:

That Man Utd. pic is SO CUTE. However, I've already been scolded by my cousin (a diehard Liverpool fan) that I'm not allowed to root for Man U. But I have a big crush on Chicharito.

    • MissEstonia says:

I give you full permission to support United! :)

The picture is adorkable! Edwin and the kids, bless!

  16. Lou says:

That should not have even been a penalty for Derby!

  17. Sally says:

As a Derby fan, I'm very pleased with the start to the season. Just not very optimistic it'll lost very long! Kasper (Schmeichel) was impressive – we probably could have got more goals if it wasn't for me in the goal! Nice to see the Championship get a mention.

  18. manutd(L). says:

great result for man utd (L), a sign of things to come.

    berbatov & hernandez(L)
