Winner’s Circle: Mario Goetze & Karim Benzema
It’s nearly the end of 2011 (already!), which means its time for leagues and/or associations to bestow some shiny medal to a few of footy’s fiercest faces and bodies. Personally, we can’t say we have a storied past of winning things and thus, know how it feels since most of the plaques stored beneath our desks say “Dirty Tackle” on them, but we (like most girls) have practised our beauty queen waves all the same.
Just in case, obvi.
Until our regal fates are able to shine brighter than the best Swarovskis pageant directors can buy, we’re taking the high road by congratulating our more fortunate peers.
First off, let’s give a big ‘hip hip, hooray!’ to Borussia Dortmund’s wonderkid, Mario Goetze, who was declared the 2011 winner of the aptly-named Tuttosport Golden Boy award just the other day. Criteria for voting did not include whether a player could wear a scarf well (he can), nor were European journos encouraged to express their blatant anti-night light bigotry anywhere on the ballot. Goetze’s lifted his new hardware before his squad’s Bundesliga match this past weekend. Confirmation that he is tall enough to reach our liquor cabinet’s top shelf, indeed.
Meanwhile, in Paris, Karim Benzema was elected French Player of the Year by France Football magazine after scoring some goals and partially growing in those zig zaggy buzz marks in his hairline in 2011. He beat out Barcelona’s Eric Abidal and Lyon’s Hugo Lloris. As for the big, verbose analysis of this one, don’t hold your breath.
Your thoughts, Kickettes? Did the right players take home these awards? Or is the Balon d’Or all you really give a squizz about?
