World Cup Countdown: Vanity Fair Brings The Pants

It’s a bank holiday, this weekend’s footy has exhausted us, and our credit card bill is due in the mail tomorrow.
So: We really needed this Vanity Fair June issue teaser photograph of Sulley Muntari (too late to pull the “shy” card now, luv), Landon Donovan (doo rag or t-shirt?), Kaká (ace bedhead), Samuel Eto’o (gold star fo’ sho), and Pato (groom fail).
As you can see, the media powers that be in America have woken up to the importance of photographing football stars in their skivvies prior to the biggest sporting event in the world. (38 days to go!)
North American Kickettes: from now on, if you have the ick and displeasure of running into someone who doesn’t “get” this sport, show them the above photo. At the very least, you can discuss Armani briefs vs Calvins, one of the more important debates of our generation.

Went to the shops before to get some random stuff..and had a look at the magazines and guess what I found there? Yes, the new issue of Vanity Fair. Don’t even ask if I bought it. Let’s just say that there were some pretty nice pics in it…. GAAAAAAH

They probably didn’t have English players because D-Beck will have been on the cover before, I expect. And Spain players – Iker isn’t famous outside Spain so there would be no point. And Italians – Buffon and Canna are famous enough but they probably couldn’t get them for some reason.
i think they'll probably have someone from every country once the mag comes out. and iker IS famous outside of spain. he's one of if not the best keepers in the world. honestly, people who watch would know who he is and people who don't watch won't have a clue who any of these people are!
Lord, didn't Drogba come across as a complete tosser with the attitude he gave Stankovic in the video clip.

i’m so happy that a magazine like Vanity Fair has put something about the World Cup out to hopefully help my fellow Americans finally see the light…but at the same time i’m twerked there was NO spanish representation. i mean, hello?!?! hottest national team by far and the European champions and they get nothing?? no Xabi? no Fernando? no SAN IKER?!?!?…but, i s’pose we just gotta take it one step at a time…we’re a little slow on the uptake sometimes…

Landon Donovan looks like the Average Joe, who was invited to the shoot, he is not nearly as fit as the others. Perhaps that’s the difference between the European league level and the North American level……

I am in LA – and just found all of you and this site (I already love it and all of you!) and, perhaps I can speak for Los Angeles and its take on Landon Donovan. With all due respect, he is not the biggest deal here, most – esp women – do not know who he is. I personally would not have put him in this class but since it's an American edition … what can I say … there IS a difference, per your wondering…

I love how Vanity Fair obviously had to get something about football out so they choose Landon Donovan and Kaka. Nothing against the latter but LD, come on…He. Sucks. And of course they don't have anyone from the Spanish team. Sigh. USA will remain ignorant on the wonder boy that is El Niño. Not that they'd appreciate him anyway but oh well.
What? VF didn't HAVE to get anything out about the World Cup – it's cool that they did, but they certainly aren't obligated to cover it at all. Have you seen the entire issue yet?? If not, don't assume they left out any country altogether. Also, us "ignorant" AMERICANS HAVE BOUGHT MORE TICKETS FOR THIS WORLD CUP THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY. There is no reason for you to put down Lando. Granted he's not the world player of the year, but he doesn't 'suck' either. It's an american magazine and they wanted to represent part of our team.
Americans didn't buy the most tickets for the world cup. America as a COUNTRY did. You forget that America is full of immigrants who still support their home country. I'm pretty sure most of those tickets that they claim was bought by Americans weren't all for the U.S. games.
you're pretty sure, but you don't know. whatev. those of us in the us who do support the sport are tired of dealing with crap from other countries who think they are so superior just b/c soccer/football is not THE sport in our country. who the hell cares? it's awesome that it is finally getting mass attention over here. VF didn't have to do it. it's not like it's a mag known for doing that type of stuff.

I totally agree Ramos. I am from the UK but my mum's family is from America and they all love Football/Soccer. Some even more than they love American Football. Its sad that others don't see that there is a huge fanbase of football supporters over in the US. Stop putting the US down when it comes to football because there are players that don't suck. And one of them in my opinion is Landon Donavan. If we, here in Europe, started to see the potential of US footballers and getting them on our teams over here than maybe they would be able develop their skills on a more European level. But that can't happen unless we stop hating. People are all about hate now a days it so annoying. Like support your team and stop putting the US down…I am an England supporter and we aren't the cream of the crop either.
thanks molly, love! it gets so infuriating sometimes. b/c we don't just have to deal with other countries putting us down, but our own sports people and nonsoccer watchers putting us down. i happen to love soccer and american football equally! i think it's awesome that the us (and all soccer players) are starting to get more love from american publications. we've only started taking it seriously again for the last 20 years are so. our players are getting better and better. our youth programs are huge. and the technical skill will get there one day soon, that's what we lack the most (first touches and such). our athletes are as physical as any other country. and landon does not suck. the person that said that must not like everton or just not like americans in general. that's a rediculous statement. he's no leo or cris, but he doesn't suck. sorry. i just hate this preconcieved, elitest attitude that so many europeans have against us. so, molly that wasn't really a reply to you besides the thanks

Not my favourite bunch perhaps, but a very good initiative by Vanity Fair i must say. Strangely enough the only one who moves me is Didier. Who would have thought! He´s gourgeous!! Christiano tries too hard as always, and Kaka does absolutely nothing to me.
Hopefully we will see some representatives from Spain soon? I feel i need some Iker, Sergio or a cute little Xavi in prancing about in their underwear

Ok 38 days is tooo long and every 4 yrs is not fair!!!!
Having studied the photo’s and video I have decided that I like what I see, i.e. the players, but not really liking how they are posed! Pato should have his arm on Eto’os shoulder, looking casual, Kaka should stay how he is (wouldn’t be him if he had his trousers off), Landon should definitely be standing up, without the doo rag, possibly with his hands behind his head, and Sulley should not be covering his face as he has a lovely smile (although my main focus was his thighs).

I don't know about the us but in the uk monthlies (magazines) usually come out on either the 1st or 2nd tuesday or sometimes wednesday (often between the 5th and 15th of each month) of the month before the month stated on the mag itself (ie… june editions come out the beginning of may, may eds the beginning of april, etc…)
by my maths that would mean it's due to come out either on the 4th (or 5th) or the 11th (or 12th) of this month.
common sense makes me think the 11th but as previews are already on the VF site i wouldn't be surprised if it's out in the US at least either tomorrow or wednesday
i'd imagine scans will be floating around the net within the next 10 days whatever happens

also i don't know if like vogue they produce totally different magazines for the US and european editions, though i think it would be rather stupid on VF part if the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy editions don't include at least this particular article and the mag is a US exclusive considering it's europe who are the major football fans (in comparison to the US – no offense) but if VF are that stupid i think whsmiths and major book stores sell many US editions of mags in major uk cities (and their train stations for some reason) such as london, manchester, birmingham, leeds, etc…
