World Cup Style Files: Managerial Duds

We love our silver foxes here at Kickette. We love it even more when they dress (almost) better than we do.  Touchline attire usually falls into one of two categories: dapper or dour. Some managers style themselves to the nines for each match, yet others prefer the close-to-home comforts of a tracksuit and a baseball cap (we’re talking about you, Tony Pulis). Let’s see how some of the men in charge during the opening weekend of the World Cup measured up.

Ready For Their Close Ups

We’re pretty sure England manager Fabio Capello wears a three-piece suit to bed. The man looks good and we’re in no position to tell him otherwise.

French NT manager Raymond Domenech also falls into the dapper category. His eyebrows, however, do not.

Brazil’s manager, Dunga, took a high-fash flash approach with his ensemble. He’s wearing a coat by Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch. Take that, Capello.

On the other side of the South American style stakes, Diego Maradona and his pint size suit were bopping all over the touchline during both of Argentina’s wins. We actually think Diego would be able to move, jump, gesture, and dance better if he were wearing his beloved trackies. Like a toddler uncomfortably dressed by his mother in his Sunday best, if he fidgets long enough, he might just shake his slacks off and give us all a scare.

Ready For The Couch

USMNT manager Bob Bradley is making Aston Villa manager/infamous tracksuit afficionado Martin O’Neill very proud with his game-time attire. At least he knows how slimming black can be.

In charge in his casual best, Bafana Bafana’s manager Carlos Alberto Parreira also opted for a rather ill-fitting managerial uniform in both of his team’s matches. As loyal Kickettes know, we don’t lurve repeat outfit performances, and when you wear your lazy day clothes twice, it makes us wonder where the local laundromats are.

At least Greece’s Otto Rehhagel has one thing right – if you’re going to go down, you might as well be comfortable in the process.

What do you think, Kickettes? Does it matter to you what your NT manager wears for matches? Do you think Joachim Loew’s retro jumper and suit combo reinvented itself during the course of Germany’s match or is he just watching too much telly from the 80s?

Jogi. :) The best looking coach at the World Cup. Although I have always preferred Klinsi to him.

  6. MadamRain says:

Everyone forgot about the Dutch, how could you fail to notice Van Marwijks'and co's tailored suits! They're definitely the best of the lot.

  7. Interista says:

I so miss Keano, that man is hot in a suit…Capello is looking very elegant even though he's not really my type..

Too bad Mourinho isn't an NT that man always makes me drool…

Here are some Quieroz pics, hard to find any good ones on google though (handsome man) http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/MD68-t3og7H/Portug…

  8. Foxy says:

Don’t be harsh on Jogi Loew, he’s usually very stylish – and he does not wear a toupee! The funniest thing was that his assistant coach was wearing the exact same outfit, making them both look rather silly.

i was roflmao when i saw them wearing the same thing!:P but i so agree- loew’s the most stylish coach out there; in fact, i had a coach crush on him during Euro.

  9. Alessandra says:

  10. Ana;) says:

    I definitely prefer the suits

Maradona's suit is so funny he's just so tiny!

kickette you forget to mention Van Marwijk the coach of Netherlands suit I think he's was matching with his asisistants in the game against denmark.

I actually think Low is the only one whose clothes are appropriate for the occasion. Not too formal (like Capello, who mistakes the games for some red carpet event) but not too "grungy" (like Maradona, who pretty much dresses like a hobo, bless his heart. He looks untidy even in a suit!). He's right in the middle of these two extremes.

And he also looks pretty nice and youthful for his age. Sorry, fanatical Germany fan here! :)

  13. SB says:

    jogi always looks good…

  14. VeNia says:

i lovvee the crazy-old-maradona style but he looked good out there with his suit!!!good for him!!

  15. aristeia says:

I think Jogi, Dunga & Mister Capello (*bows*) all look good. Maradona looks lost in that suit. It's sweet that he tried, but he failed lol. And lol @ Domenech's eyebrows, they match his eccentric personality.

  16. Ella says:

Disclaimer: I'm probably totally biased on this one. But I like how Bob Bradley wears a track suit b/c it seems like he's sort of one with his team. He's their boss, but will workout / practice with them etc.

i think bob would look funny in a suit. but still scary. soul crushing stare and all

i prefer suits for the most part. however, our scary coach can wear whatever he wants while he stares me down through the tv ::shudders::

  19. I always prefer a suit. Professional and business like, and on the right man (*cough*RoyKeane*cough*), super hot.

  20. Bria says:

Prefer the suits…..liking Dunga's attire. At least they aren't wearing two different shoes like Wenger did couple years ago!!

  21. batso says:

otto- the man who put us in the top of europe in 2004!!!

  22. zztop says:

I was wondering who makes Joachim Low's suits and shirts. He usually looks very Jil Sander or Helmut Lang.

    • Susie says:

I agree. I actually like the way he dresses. Reminds me of Brett Anderson from Suede for those of us old enough to remember that British band from the 90s.

    • AnnaBlume says:

Jogi’s suits and shirts (as well as those of the whole German team) are made by Strenesse. You can even get that blue jumper on their website. :D

  23. Goosie says:

Although Cameroon isn't performing up to par, I'm disappointed that Paul Le Guen wasn't somehow mentioned in this article. He's a hottie. :(

  24. Erin says:

I like the dapper gents, bringing the class.

  25. KRISTINA says:

I am voting for SUITS !!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Anastasia says:

Jogi should just did the jacket and rock the jumper look.

    Capello's suits never disappoint.

  27. Missy Manchester says:

Joachim Loew wears a (very bad) toupee.

Poor Diego Maradona. I would describe his "style" as 'trailer trash mafioso'.

(Kickette: I take it you couldn't find any photos of Carlos Quieroz? He's a rather dashing silver fox.)
